It was by a funny stroke of luck that we stumbled upon Thumb’s Cafe in Ipoh.
We were not in Ipoh for a food excursion. It was in fact a photography skewed trip, with a trunkload of clothes in the boot of the Volkswagen Passat, heading to north for landscape inspiration shoot.
Following the success of their first outlet in Menara Tan & Tan at Jalan Tun Razak (known as Living Food Bistro) Ashley’s at Telawi aims to serves their fans at the Bangsar/Damansara/PJ area.
And yes I’m one of their happy fans now that Ashley’s is nearer to home. 🙂
Too many cafes, too little time.

Recently I gave up trying to keep up with the current proliferation of “coffee cafes”. I’ll only hop into a cafe if it comes highly recommended by some coffee snobs connoisseurs that I trust or if I happen to be in the vicinity.
For Encore Patisserie Cafe it was the latter.
There wasn’t any raving reviews about it so it didn’t come across as of any particular urgency.
But when I walked in last week I thought Encore does deserve a mention. For one the array of pastries and cakes looked really well-made; shape, form and ingredients.

What: Casual dining cafe that serves authentic french sweet & savory crêpes*, waffles, salads, sandwiches & ice cream.
What to order here: Crepes of course! I tried a waffle and while I do like it, I don’t think those who are accustomed to buttery, rich waffles would enjoy it. Still, do order one and share to try this particularly butter-free recipe.
Overall experience: 3 visits so far and I would recommend friends/readers to come here for some sweet and savoury bites.
Price: Basic sweet crepes starts from RM10/16 to RM28 for those with added chocolate/fruits/nuts. RM30+ would get you a flambeed crepe. Ice creams are RM13 per scoop.
Similar pricing applies for savoury crepes.
The crepes here; also called Galettes are made with buckwheat flour imported from France, which well, kind of explained the pricing.

I was only interested to visit La Crêperie de Caroline after seeing on my big bro’s facebook about a certain ‘burger crepe’. As you may know I’m a huge fan of burgers and having one in the form of a crepe seems worth the drive to Bangsar.
So here’s the La Breitz Burger (RM32.00), not in your regular burger bun and not with a regular burger patty either.
I have written so much about Swich cakes (and I still have about another 8 cakes more to go in draft) that I don’t think I need to go into details about each of Swich components in this high tea set.
With such a lofty claim, a burger fanatic would really have to check them out right?
Now, let me make it clear. No, Burgertory doesn’t make the best burgers in town. I haven’t tried their BEEF burgers so I’ll judge that once I do. Right now myburgerlab still makes the best beef burgers (IMHO).
For PORK burgers alone, Andes at Aman Suria does a mean one, while Nambawan, a lesser known outlet yes, but serves no lesser quality pork burgers. But the pork burgers here at Burgertory sure beats the likes of Ante at Publika, Fat Boys, Sid’s Pub, Tom, Dick & Harry, The Hungry Hog, The Big Bad Wolf Bangsar and all the other pork burgers I have had so far in KL.
After the disappointing Kaffa Coffee session, we took a walk across the square to Jin Yi by Coffee Ritual, right above Seri Penang and opposite Uptown 7, the multi-storey carpark for Uptown. Uptown area is notoriously popular with DBKL towing “services” so it’s advisable to park your vehicles in proper areas. The parking fee is negligibly RM1-RM2 per hour and there’s always space at the upper floors. Sure beats getting your car towed!
