PickNik @ Publika Solaris Dutamas KL – love the pandan creme brulee!

A friend of mine asked me recently for a good creme brulee in KL.
The first one that came to mine was this pandan creme brulee at PickNik. While the rest of the food (or at least the ones we sampled that night) wasn’t satisfactory, this creme brulee was AMAZING.

Never a fan of creme brulee because creme brulee is well, boring creme brulee; Chef Nik’s recipe is an entirely creative interpretation yet retaining the essence of a good creme brulee.

The Pandan Crème Brulee was a refreshing green; intensely pandan flavoured custard that paired perfectly with the thick gula Melaka.

Kudos to Chef Nik thinking out of the box! Substituting the common white sugar with palm sugar was certainly the factor that made the crème brulee outstanding. With a scoop of coconut ice cream on top this was almost like Chendol minus the ice!
Lastly, the burnt sugar crust on top was nicely done too.

Zervit.my – reserve and get served!

Do you make reservations for meals at restaurants or do you just walk in?

I am, frankly, more of the latter. But that’s because I usually dine alone, or perhaps with just 2-3 pax at most.
For those who consistently plan meal outings with friends and families, an efficient restaurant reservation system are much appreciated.

Besides the usual direct reservation system via calling the outlet’s number (which in my experience can be rather unreliable), sites such as serves to smoothen the whole reservation process by eliminating the need to pick up the phone on top of allowing reservations to be made to many F & B establishments on ONE portal at ANYTIME of the day.
And if you do not have a place in mind as yet, you can browse by shop name, location or type of cuisine on Zervit.my; which helpfully suggest potential venues.

Delicious peanut butter! Nuts Enough – Malaysia

I have my phases. Sometimes it’s bread and peanut butter. Sometimes its’ our local sweet rich kaya.
At times I’m only spreading fruit jams on my bread.

But I’ll always have a jar of peanut butter in my fridge. Because nothing can beat the satisfying taste of thick, roasty, sweet salty peanut butter on the tongue.
And because nothing makes a plain slice of toast better!

Xin Cuisine, Concorde Hotel KL – homely, classic pork dishes – BBQ crispy suckling pig, braised pork belly, slow-cooked pork tendon

Being Chinese, pork is a staple meat in our diet.
From simple stir-fries to braised dishes and curries, we love our pork and we grew up enjoying our families’ classic home cooked recipes.

For those lucky enough to have their families near, these dishes may be an everyday affair.
For most of us, a home cooked meal is a luxury, perhaps enjoyed annually during Chinese New Year or maybe monthly during hometown visits.

First Impressions: The Asus ZenFone 4, 5 and 6 – RM299, RM599 & RM899

I was at the launch of the ZenFone in Jakarta and besides the launch event and seeing the rather animated and cool CEO of Asus (for the first time) Jonney on stage, there was a in-depth technical seminar and a full experimental area for attendees during the day.

One of PJ’s best desserts: Cempedak Rolls with Vanilla Ice Cream @Fat Spoon Cafe, Uptown Damansara

Hot crispy rolls encasing sweet, thick, mushy, ripe cempedak pulp; best eaten with generous coating of icy ice cream. This is such an original creation isn't it; making clever use of a local…

Harum Manis Restaurant, Jakarta – Indonesian food!

This is my first time in Jakarta (I was in Solo and Bali last year) and though it was primarily a “work” trip (we are here for the Asus ZenFone launch), we are Malaysians with an insatiable stomach so food was very much a big part of our itinerary.

One of our Indonesian food affairs was at this elegant Javanese restaurant with traditional contemporary interiors. The venue cleverly accentuates the ambiance of both an elegant high-end fine restaurant and a warm comfortable Ningrat House.
