There isn’t many (or is there any at all) outlets in Melaka that offers Nyonya peranakan food economy rice style.
In most Nyonya restaurants in Melaka, you are hard-pressed to dine in a group and to order many dishes in order to sample the variety.
Set lunches such as the ones available in the best Nyonya restaurants in Melaka such Bulldog Cafe (pork-free) and Unicorn Cafe (serves pork) are limited to ONE dish per set.
After numerous trips to Melaka, I finally tracked down Grace from East & West Rendezvous Café. Though her shop is in the Jonker vicinity it is off the more popular stretch of Jonker and hence the difficulty of finding it.
I had to call her personally many times for directions and was near giving up but the need to try her famous Nyonya chang (glutinous rice dumplings) kept me motivated to go on yet another circle around Jonker to find her shop. LOL!
Since I’m on the subject of yong tau foo and best fishballs in Melaka (have you read my latest post – best fishballs in Bee Bee Hiong ? It’s HERE if you haven’t! 🙂 ), I decided to keep the momentum going with this yong tau foo in Restoran Dong Fung on Jalan Temenggor which I had visited last month.
Good fishballs/fish paste takes skills, patience and of course a great recipe.
I’m not particularly excited about yong tau foo but I do go a bit crazy over fishballs. I love them springy with genuine fish flavour (oh duhh) and bursting with the natural sweetness of the sea.
A high order I know, with the perfectly spherical machine-formed, MSG-fied and flour laden ones that all of us are subjected to these days that it’s possible to even forget what a really good fishball is supposed to taste like.
I have a backlog of articles for my Melaka good food (subjective of course) guide and here I am back in Melaka again.
When will I ever finished posting about all the wonderful food I ate? 😀

This is truly a great Nyonya kuih recommendation by Daniel.
I missed it on my previous trip so I made sure I was there by 3.30pm this time. True enough, even at that early hour (operational hours are 3-5 pm or when all are sold out, whichever earlier) on a Friday evening, business was brisk and supply was already running low.
After my previous post (read HERE –> What to eat in Melaka – Baba Charlie) some argued that Baba Charlie is too commercialized and overrated.
Well, I’m all for constructive feedback so thank you to those who said so. 🙂
This then bought me to my question; surely there are other masters of nyonya kuih making in this heritage rich albeit getting-too-commercial for my taste city? As it is I’m having difficulty getting good, authentic Nyonya cuisine here so pray tell me that delectable nyonya kuih is not a fast disappearing art too?
