My top desserts picks in KL/PJ

I’m a dessert fiend.

As much as I advocateĀ ‘eating clean’, I have a love-hate relationship with sugar. I can’t live without it still.
The best I could do is opt for less sugar or select “healthier” sugars (honey, agave, coconut palm sugar) in my drinks and food. I do limit my intake of desserts (I seldom finish a whole slice of cake or a full scoop of ice cream) and weekends are my indulgent days.

For this article that I did for Zafigo.com I had put together my top picks of desserts in town. I’m posting it here as well (original article –> HERE ) and adding a few more to the list. šŸ™‚

Let’s begin with something local, cheap and simple. Like our dear ais kacang; the familiarĀ mould of shaven ice drizzled with our rose syrup and gula melaka and topped with all things sweet and delicious in a bowl.
As much as I adore my Italian gelato and Japanese mochi, the ais kacang stays top in my list of favourite things.
WHERE: Ais kacang and chendol at Brickfields
In our hot and humid city,Ā sweet, finely-shaved iceĀ with toppings of various textures and flavours (usually nuts, jellies, beans, sweet corns) is perfect to sooth parched throats and to cool the body down.

Shaved ice is very popular in Malaysia and can generally be presented in 2 forms; ā€œais kacangā€ (or simply ABC) or Chendol.

The former is a mound of fine ice drizzled with red, black syrup and evaporated milk with toppings such as sweet corn, red bean, jelly, attap chee (palm seeds) and for some versions; creamy ice cream and fresh fruits.

Miraval – A wine by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie @ Sofitel So Singapore

My day in Singapore got off to a great start today. šŸ™‚

It was my first time stepping into Sofitel So Singapore and I certainly wasn’t prepared for this elegant blend of city modernity and classic French refinement.
As I strolled into the lobby I felt the understated sophistication instantly; but gladly it wasn’t the stuffy kind, but instead a warm, comforting kind of welcome.
Some hotels achieve grandeur with sombre colours and ornate furniture while others throw splashes of colours everywhere. Sofitel So straddles the balance between colours, glitters and metal nicely, creating a one-of-a-kind ambiance that stay imprinted in your mind for a long while.

Best cakes in KL @ Swich Cafe Publika – Durian Cendol Cheesecake & many more!

There’s a reason why my weekly cake quota (which is about 2 slices) goes to Swich Cafe.
Their cakes consistent hits all the right notes for me; never too dry or greasy, quality ingredients (I can tell ok!) and always fresh because they have very stringent quality control.

I would relax and enjoy my cakes at the outlet (more like a little cafe) since the location is tucked away from the busy main boulevard or I’ll grab my selection and eat at home.
Nothing like some good desserts to get the writing mode on! šŸ˜€

51 Restaurant and Bar – Changkat Bukit Bintang – good steaks in KL!

The 51 Restaurant is actually under the Pampas Group of restaurants. The Pampas restaurants (PAMPASĀ GrillĀ &Ā Bar on Changkat, Pampas Reserve at Bukit Ceylon’s Suasana Residences, Pampas Burger Dataran Jelatek, Setiawangsa and 51 Restaurant) are known for their steaks.

Funnily enough though I’m a huge steak eater I haven’t stepped into any of Pampas restaurants till recently.
I guess I must have given up finding good steaks in KL without having to pay and arm and a leg.
My default steak places has been either Beato or The Restaurant at Saujana (Chef Alexander Waschl is a superb chef and I like most of his creations).

Now, I added 51 Restaurant to my list because I just hadĀ a really good rib eye for RM45++! šŸ™‚

Example: 250g Grass Fed Rib Eye, medium rare – RM45++ .
