Pit Stop Community Cafe KL: Feeding both hope & the tummy for the homeless

I first got to know of Pit Stop Community Cafe from Sean’s blog.

That was back in April 2016 when the cafe first started and I remembered it since because of its ambitious objectives – social enterprise, to feed the homeless and poor, to offer paying meals as a cafe, to offer suspended meals, to be a one stop centre for goods made by the urban poor and sell them commercially, to provide training and eventually job placements to the needy, to offer counselling as well as to serve as a coordination base for NGOs that work in social services to collaborate with each other.

There were so much planned that I felt my head reeling when I read his post.

SCS Butter for Chinese New Year 2017 – baking and recipes

In 2015 I posted 8 different pineapple tart recipes from SCS.

That article proved to be hugely popular. You can check out the recipes here and bake some unique pineapple tarts for 2017 –> https://rebeccasaw.com/scsbutterpineappletarts/

I’m not sure what happened in 2016 but I was thrilled when I got news that SCS is sharing some cookies as well as recipes this year.

I waited in anticipation for my samples to arrive and eagerly munched on the Lucky Tangerine, the Treasure Cookies, the Pot of Gold Miniature Tarts and the Precious Pistachio cookies when it did.

The range of cookies and the box it came in was definitely much more impressive back in 2015 than the current 2017’s set.
I guess everyone is scaling down huh…

Anyhow, personally the Lucky Tangerine a bit weird tasting but the butter cookie base for the precious pistachio is good. I love nuts so the Pot Gold Miniature Tarts disappeared in a jiffy.

The Top Komtar – what to see and do

I was an invited guest for the opening of The Top Komtar last week.

It has been an extremely busy period since the time I came back until today so pardon the late posting!

Anyhow, a few of my Penang friends posted on Facebook that the entrance fees were not “local-friendly” and seems to be targeting tourists only.
I wish I had more time to explore all of what The Top has to offer and provide opinion on whether the prices were worth it but the media pass allocated only gave me access to Level 65.

Plearnwan @ Hua Hin – a must visit!

We know that Thailand is wonderful.

The food, the sights, the shopping and the wonderful hospitality – what other country could possibly rival Thailand in those factors?

Besides the bustling capital of Bangkok, visitors flock to the nearby islands for its pristine waters and beach fun.

One of the more relaxed island destination is Hua Hin, a mere 3 hours, 200km road trip from Bangkok.

At Hua Hin, one shops, eat and play on the beach.
With its long stretches of relatively quiet beaches, Hua Hin provides a beach holiday minus the rowdy party crowd.
Likewise, it pleasantly lacks the hassling hawkers and overbearing tourist presence of the likes of Samui or Phuket.

Buy the Best Bak Chang / Pork meat rice dumplings from Penang!

Where to buy the best traditional rice dumplings (bak chang) in KL or PJ Malaysia?

It took a while but I’m thrilled to say that I’ve found a superb bak chang (pork meat rice dumplings) that could rival my grandmother’s!

So here it is.
Watch the video for an accurate depiction of what to expect and you will find some images below as well.

VIDEO: Bak Chang

A video is always interesting to see how the rice dumplings are isn’t it? 🙂

The price is RM9 each; a steal considering the quality of ingredients used and the amount of ingredients stuffed into a rice dumpling.

Each dumpling oozes with savoury and luscious ingredients comprising of 2-3 pieces of juicy of chunky pork belly, a whole salted egg yolk, mushrooms, a whole tender, sweet chestnut plus dried shrimps.
It is a X-large serving size too, almost 1.5 times the size of regular bak chang which makes it a filling meal!
Sometimes the rice for chang can be overly mushy or even undercooked, but years of experience have honed the maker’s skills and I’ve noticed that her rice dumplings are fragrant and steamed to perfection every time.

The current market is at least RM7 -8 (SS2 market, etc) and frankly, the amount of meat and other ingredients in those aren’t close to what you see here.

Tiger Lily: Affordable and delicious Thai food in DC Mall, Damansara City!

DC Mall at Damansara City is slowly coming to life.

We were there to support a friend’s venture last week and we took the opportunity to explore the mall.
There is no cinema nor gym and the anchor tenant seems to be Village Grocer. Next year, five-star Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara will be welcoming visitors with 312 exquisite rooms and suites.

This area looks set to be vibrant soon.

For now, the building is quiet and empty and only a handful of eateries and businesses are open.
Parking isn’t free (in case some of you think it may be since it is not officially”opened yet“), the air conditioning cold and the floors dimly lit.
