Hummingbirds Coffee Bar @ Beatrice Looi Boutique, Telawi Bangsar – wasabi macarons, durian cake & the best red velvet in town??

UPDATE: 2nd round –  HERE –> Carrot Cake, Charcoal Cake & Tiramisu!

The hunt for the best Red Velvet remained on-going.
I must have tried every Red Velvet I’ve seen/came across in KL. Some I have blogged about, some I haven’t (Sigh…yes yes… my backlogs are piling up) but I promise I will ermmm…eventually finish posting all of them. :)

But for now let’s just focus on the ones worthy of mention shall we?
The best (IMHO) was the one at A Taste Boutique , but their boutique is kinda far (in Putra Heights) & their kiosk at Sunway Pyramid doesn’t carry the Red Velvet cake most of the time. Also, it’s been a while since I eaten theirs, so I’m not sure if it still taste the same. Anyhow, it was SO GOOD that it had left a lasting impression on me.

For me, a good Red Velvet is a combination of luxuriant flavour from the sponge & perfect smooth light cream cheese frosting. The one at A Taste Boutique was a fair example of a Red Velvet that I like, followed closely by another that’s baked by a friend FBB; and you can try it at The Bee, Jaya One since he supplies the cake there.

Today, I’m pleased that I have finally found another Red Velvet cake worth blogging about. At the most unlikely places really; right here on Telawi 3, Bangsar, in a designer’s boutique!

Hummingbirds Coffee Bar, bangsar-02

Hummingbirds Coffee Bar shares the same space with Beatrice Looi Boutique; and exudes a most charming vibe with special made to order blue high-back comfy chairs (love those chairs, so pretty! ) & an impressive list of coffee from Germany. There were even some funky drinks like Cucumber Oh La la that is alcoholic @ RM25+, (how does one mix cucumber with alcohol is beyond me)  & a very good selection of tea. This “cafe” is just perfect for that afternoon tête-à-tête with a BFF. :)

Nestle Drumstick Almond Thrill Launch @ Sunway Giza!

I was given the opportunity to do something wackybecky during the launch & I thought, why not?? Heheh.. :)

Check the video out. It looked pretty simply, but the outfit was pretty restrictive, so I couldn’t really jump that high. WOuld have love to make an impact by HURLING myself towards the velcro wall (wahahahaahhah) but I couldn’t get enough momentum.

Also, for photography sake, they wanted me to stick to the velcro wall with my face facing the front. Hence I could only fling myself at the wall at the last point. All in all, it’s still pretty wacky anyways. 😉 .

So what was this launch all about?
It’s the launch of the new Nestle Drumstick; ALMOND THRILL. This is a new fun flavor that’s to join Nestle’s famous Drumstick® family which consists of; “Vanilla’s Got Nuts”, “Chocolate Blast” and “Saucy Strawberry” as well as “Kit Kat®”.
The new flavor, deemed as the “Almond Thrill” promise to offer more crunch in every bite!

Day 7 Victoria, Australia – Annual Sand Sculpting Australia Exhibition at Frankston Waterfront #BeckyinOzzie

Here’s my Travel Tuesday post for this week. Very apt timing for me to post on this as I was just back from my Sandsculpting competition trip to Cherating last week – (Post HERE ). Click & see if you haven’t! I sculpted a tarantula! :)

When I was in Frankston, Victoria, I stared at these sculptures in awe & wondered how is it possible to crave such marvels of sand.

Hence while I was sweating buckets under the sun sculpting my little masterpiece with my team at Holiday Villa Cherating, I realized sand sculpting is serious business.

As you can see, our tarantula was nothing like the ones I saw in the Annual Sand Sculpting Australia Exhibition at Frankston Waterfront, Victoria! LOL!

Zipangu @ Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur – RM96++ weekend Japanese Buffet

I wonder if the popularity has dwindled for places like Zipangu, Kampachi & Iketeru – all these restaurants that were once considered the old dame of Japanese buffets, ever since the proliferation of cheaper, mass market Japanese buffets like Tao, Jogoya, Tenji, Saisaki & the likes.

When I walked in on a Sat afternoon for lunch, the restaurant was considerably packed, with the crowd much much better behaved & sedate compared to the monkeys people that you normally meet jostling for fresh sashimi & oysters at your other mid-priced buffets in town. I guess the “prestige” of being in Shang filters the crowd a bit.

Zipangu, for RM96++ /pax offers almost pure Jap fare for their weekend buffet. Fresh seafood was aplenty; though it was no longer sourced from Japan directly, and this poster in the lifts & at the front of their restaurant clearly stated their source of fresh produce.

Zipangu’s salmon is imported from Norway, beef and scallops from Australia, crab from Alaska, tuna from Indonesia and local herbs and greens from Cameron Highlands.

While I won’t say that patrons of Zipangu Japanese buffet are spoilt for choice, for choices were obviously lacking; I would say this is worth considering if you are looking for purely Japanese fare, & definitely worth your moolah if you are a Shang card holder. For it is “Buy One Free One” if you are.

The appetisers. Pretty much the norm.

The fresh sashimi. Nothing too fancy but you can expect the expected. Tuna (maguro), salmon, kampachi, octopus, hen clam, scallops, shime saba (mackarel) & butter fish.

[Hosting Catherine Bell from Dish Magazine, NZ] – Last stop in KL – Vishal Food & Catering @ Brickfields, KL

While I’m sure all countries are proud of their cuisine, we Malaysians takes it up another notch with our fevour on dining & our food heritage. We have food at our disposal 24 hours, food is a universal language for us & there’s no better ice breaker or conversation starter than the topic of “Where to eat“, “Where to find the best xxxxx“, “Have you tried..at… ” ??

And we are more than delighted to show & share with fellow foodies on recommended places to eat & the same goes to any visiting friends or foreigner to our country.
I remembered that’s how my blog started; or any other food blogs for that matter. It usually begin as a platform to document our makan adventures & to impart our thoughts on the food we ate, or to shout out of our recent discovery of a new eatery, an awesome F&B promo or what we thought to be the best char siew/chicken rice/curry mee..etc available out there.

So when I was emailed a request to host a Ms Catherine Bell, a food journalist from New Zealand based magazine Dish, my immediate reaction was “why not“!
It would fun, & I would make sure she had a good time! :)

She has just departed for NZ yesterday, and there is so much I have to share as we certainly went places! So much food, so many places in just 2 days.
But it was this moment that I felt really proud about personally, this particular instant when she took her first mouthful of rice using her hands at Vishal’s in Brickfields. This was one of the highlights of her trip as it was her first time sampling banana leaf rice & her first time eating using her hands! (She said eating with her hands during her childhood doesn’t count of course!)
