UPDATE: Another post on the ultra-delectable Chocolate Blueberry Cheese cupcake! Check it out!

It may not be on the popular Telawi stretch, but location didn’t seem to matter for Belinda Jee’s little gem ” TeaRoom by Bel Jee”.
It was only opened last June but has already gained quite a reputation. Of course it helped that her previous set of of clientele from her home-based designer cake business followed her wherever she goes; and while the little cafe does allow her to serve walk-in guests, I can see that retail has yet to be the core of her business.

Yup, this is it. All the space & tables there is for the cosy cafe.

The cafe mainly attracts the working crowd in the vicinity. Taking into consideration the time factor, Bel has cleverly created homely but “fast” food that can be served immediately – or maybe with a bit of reheat. Take for example the pies.

Readers of my blog would have noticed that lately, I’ve been consistently posting generally raving reviews of places I’ve patronised. I still occasionally experience those “not -so-great -dining moments” of course, but that has become an accepted dilemma as I have pretty fussy tastebuds. However, they were never so bad that it spurred me to write a negative review.

The oh-s0-not-great Sashimi Platter that cost us RM99++.

As the blog gets more popular, I try to skew towards positivity, as I have been criticized before for my harsh reviews & oh-called unobjective opinions. I still cared shit for what people think, but hey, sharing delicious desserts & food are so much more satisfying compared to a whiny post.

But today you’re getting a whiny post. Whiny because I paid a chunk of my currently carefully proportioned out-of -work budget on bland food, and to top it all off, I was sorely disappointed as this was supposedly my celebratory dinner after discharging from the hospital for ailments that till today the doctors are not able to pinpoint.

Ramadan Buffet 2011 : Maytower Hotel & Serviced Residences, Kuala Lumpur

I had the most pleasant dining experience during the Ramadan buffet preview at Maytower Hotel last week. So much so that I would readily recommend La Maison (the restaurant where the Ramadan buffet would be held throughout the month of August) to diners seeking good old traditional Malay favourites reminiscing of their grandparents’ time & beyond cooking.

If you have followed my Ramadan Buffet 2011 Series, you would have noticed that I’m a roast lamb addict.

Yes, the tender meat, fully permeated with the lovely spices starts each Ramadan dinners I have had over the last few weeks perfect. The jolly chef here spoiled me rotten by giving me such marvellous cuts – the slightly bloody parts & served doused with just minimal mint sauce & gravy.

Delicious. Could I have some more please??

Taiwan Fair of Fruits and Vegetables, Jaya Grocer – Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang

Just last week, Jaya Grocer at Empire Shopping Gallery launched the Taiwan Fair of Fruits and Vegetables, bringing to us urbanites in Klang Valley the opportunity to sample rare imported Taiwan vegetables & fruits at pretty affordable prices (well, minus the flight tickets & accomodation to Taiwan is savings no?!).

The objective of the fair is to draw attention to availability of these unique Taiwanese fruits, especially the Golden Mangoes and the luscious dark Kyoho grapes, and vegetables in Malaysia.

Golden mangoes

The Taiwan Golden Mangoes are predominantly grown on the hillside 200-500m above sea level in southern Taiwan. This Jin Hwang variety of mangoes has large fruits with a thin core. Its skin is golden and smooth with a touch of light pink, and its flesh is silky with almost no fibres. The harvesting season is from May to September.
To ensure the quality and safety of mangoes, the government has established a quality and safety management programme specifically for the orchards and distributors that supply export mangoes. The system stipulates registration for farmers and exporters, certification of exporting orchards, guidance for integrated pest management with reduced use of pesticides, pesticide residue detection, appropriate pre-harvesting handling and post-harvesting packaging, and a barcode labeling operation and tracking scheme. The recent increase in export volume attests the effectiveness of this quality and safety management system.

Irwin
Irwin is another variety grown in Taiwan for export. It has apple-red skin, and has fragrant and yellow velvety flesh.

Kyoho grapes – I liked these really sweet babies! It’s almost like the Korean grapes kinda texture (where the skin & the flesh separates easily) but not as sour. On the right are the sweet plums.

I certainly concur on the bountiful spread. After all; key selling points of buffets are value-for-money, sheer variety and the freedom of choice in addition to the copious amount of food you may partake for the hours you are present at the venue.

For a 3-digit priced Ramadan Buffet (so far I have sampled Dorsett KL & Maytower Hotel where each are priced at <RM80/pax), Latest Recipe does deliver the works.

There’s the requisite roasted lamb for starters; which to me it’s a must for Ramadan buffets!!
