MIGF 2012: Steaks at Qba Latin Bar & Grill, Westin KL

When I met the bubbly Chef Pearl during the MIGF Gala Launch, she had proudly declared that she serves the best steaks in KL.

Now, that’s akin to waving a big red flag to my insatiable carnivorous self. And with the sheer amount of restaurants in KL and PJ, that is a very big claim.

Peruvian Food @ Ritz Carlton KL – October 9th -16th, 2012

Foreign and out-of-the-ordinary cuisines intrigues me, no doubt due to its unfamiliarity. Each bite and each waft of aroma leaves so much room for interpretation; what could have possibly contributed to its taste, what makes it this colour, why was it of such textures?
My adventurous palate has lead me to the only known Peruvian restaurant in town – Ristretto at Mt Kiara. The experience didn’t do Peruvian cuisine justice. To be fair, Ristretto could have improved by now but I won’t know as I haven’t been back.

My next South American food experience was at the Venezuelan Gastronomic Fest 2012 Kuala Lumpur earlier in April.
The sweet Venezuelan Author and Chef Carmen Rawstron spent hours educating me about Venezuelan food and explained each dish she prepared that evening. I walk away with a wreath of priceless knowledge that I captured onto my blog and into memory.

A session with Peruvian Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino of Restaurant & Bar Malabar, Lime Peru during the Singapore World Gourmet Summit 2012 shed further light to this exotic cuisine. Chef Pedro whipped up a ceviche on the spot and explained to us about leche de tigre.

This evening was no different. Chef Rafael Lopez-Aliaga of the JW Marriott in Lima was all smiles and all too happy to share about the dishes he prepared for us.

But HP Ink Advantage Launch 2012 was something else. A rather brilliant collaboration with the unconventional yet talented artist Red Hong Yi, HP’s latest Ink Advantage campaign’s message of “Print More, Pay Less and Risk Nothing” was delivered across effectively via the astounding artwork by artist Red Hong Yi.

MIGF 2012 – The Restaurant @ The Saujana Resort. Highlight: Foie Gras ice cream!

It was an educational and a magnificent dinner session with Chef Alexander of The Restaurant at the Club at the Saujana Resort last week. His passion and his conviction to serving the best cuisine within the best of his capability was something I noticed and admire when I first met him last year. Another dinner followed (the Michel Rolland wines pairing) and his attention to detail and skillfully crafted menu shone again.

World Gourmet Festival 2012 – Bangkok: Chef Michael Mina & Chef Frédéric Vardon

As I feasted on the lunch buffet (you may view the pictures HERE) at the Fours Seasons Bangkok, I waited for the 2 chefs Chef Michael Mina & Chef Frédéric Vardon to make their appearance.
Chef Micheal Mina dish’s was Roasted Foie Gras with Pineapple Confit, Macadamia Crunch, Green Cardamom Glaze while Chef Frédéric Vardon (Le 39V, Paris, France), staying true to his French cooking roots showed us his Argenteuil line-caught Sea Bass with Cooked and Raw Asparagus.

I liked Michael’s dish better as he gave tribute to some of the local ingredients by incorporating it into his dish, namely pineapples, cardamon and Thai basil leaves. We got to sample his recipe after the demonstration and I liked how the macadamia nuts complements the livery foie gras (think nutty and buttery) as well as how the tangy sweet Thai pineapples gave a sweet edge to the overall dish.
