McDonald’s Beef Samurai Burger, Sakura McFizz & Katsu Curry – Malaysia. Pork Samurai Burger – Thailand

Wherever I’m at when I’m traveling, I make it a point to try to visit the local McDonalds and sample something uniquely available in that country.

In Paris, there was the McBaguette. In Korea, the Bulgogi burger. In Thailand it has always been about their rice burgers.

Please don’t misunderstand, I’m not a Mcd fan and I don’t advocate eating anything from McDonalds. And some of their burgers really sucks are dry and its size shrinks year by year so they now offer “double” burgers so consumers has pay more to eat more to be able to eat a substantial burger from McD.
Anyhow, it’s just fun to sample McDonald’s offering in other countries. And oh, especially so if there’s pork. 🙂

Today’s Choices Magazine – the 1st Free Reversed Concept Magazine in Malaysia!

When I’m not glued to my Asus Zenbook, I do read books and magazines.

Yes, REALLY. 😛

The thing about reading books and magazines is mostly about nostalgia for me. Sometimes, in an unexplained way, holding and reading a hardcopy does feel good and “cosy”. From hours in front of the laptop formulating online campaigns, editing pictures and blogging, it’s a relieve to grab a book and be spared the glare of the screen at times.

And of course, you can drift off to sleep without worries! 🙂

Day 5 – Pantai Kemasik Kemaman, Nor Arfa Batik Terengganu – Malaysia Tourism Hunt 2012

Oh hello! What do you guys think of the Malaysia Tourism Hunt 2012 so far? Have you been following the previous posts I published? 🙂

I’m dead tired every night but the days out (minus the driving) hunting, playing and picking up valuable knowledge about my own country is well worth the effort. In continuation from my previous update, we were hosted for a night at the Bukit Gambang Resort City in Kuantan. Morning call is 6am, breakfast is at 7am and check-out is 8am, a routine for us by now.

I have been up every morning at 4am to bring you daily updates on the Malaysia Tourism Hunt so you better read my posts ok! 😀
By 6am I’m normally famished and brain dead from 2 hours of writing. A good breakfast helps; and the breakfast buffet at Bukit Gambang Resort City offers an admirably vast selection which were actually tasty.

Half boiled eggs! YES!
The roti jala and roti canai was thin, crispy and served with very good dhal. It was better than some mamak shops in KL/PJ for sure.

Day 4 – Sg Pasu Homestay, Raub Pahang & National Elephant Conservation Centre, Kuala Gandah – Malaysia Tourism Hunt 2012

It’s Day 5 of the Malaysia Tourism Hunt 2012 and we are heading off from Kuantan to Kuala Terengganu for a “food challenge” first thing in the morning! Anything related to food is much welcomed and I sure love the east coast cuisine. 🙂

Here’s a quick recap on what we did yesterday – Day 4 of the Malaysia Tourism Hunt 2012. So far our schedule has been rather unforgiving. We finished late each night and we have to be up by 6am – 7am each morning for breakfast. Flag off is 8am sharp and we were on the road most of the time traveling through highways and coastal roads to our destinations.

It was a chilly start to our day yesterday as it rained heavily on Fraser Hill. The air was brisk, chilly and oh-so-fresh! I breathe in as deeply as possible, almost as if in belief that it would clean my lungs! 😀

Shahzan Inn serves decent and basic fare for breakfast with cereals, bread and spreads, an egg station as well as some local hot dishes. Nothing that makes you go for seconds, but provided necessary sustenance.

Day 3 of Malaysia Tourism Hunt 2012 – Pekan Kuala Kubu Bahru & Fraser Hill

The last 2 days set the preliminaries right with ample briefing and networking sessions. Most of the participants were warmed up and mingling easily by the time we were to official start the 6D5N hunt. Day 3; yesterday marked the official flag off by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. This begun our journey of 900 kilometres over highways, highlands and coastal roads to enjoy the natural beauty of Malaysia and visit famous tourist attractions such as Fraser’s Hill, Gambang in Pahang and Pulau Redang in Terengganu!

Sharone Hakman of Masterchef US – Cooking demo in Mid Valley!

I had the privilege of interviewing Sharone Hakman when he came to Malaysia last week as part of his recent promotion tour. Out of all the chefs I have had interviewed, met and chatted with in my blogging life and as a foodie, the one thing that struck me hard about Sharone was his genuinity. That big guy is thoroughly REAL, and I could catch no pretenses from him throughout the duration of the half a day I spent trolling him from the interview room to the supermarket and till he finished his cooking demo on stage at Mid Valley.

Aloft Bangkok – Sukhumvit 11 – My vibrant funky room!

I was in Thailand again last week for the World Gourmet Festival 2012, a rather grand annual event held at Four Seasons Hotel in Bangkok. Over 7 days, 8 chefs as well as food and wine specialists from around the world will be preparing the cuisine that made them famous; and for a taste of their sublime creations, you can choose to book yourself a place in one of the dinners/lunches/teas during the week.

It was rather different affair from the World Gourmet Summit in Singapore, but more on that later. 🙂

Halal Dim Sum – Ti Chen @ The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur

*Guest post by Kevin who was my dining partner that day.

The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur celebrates not only once but twice this time around reintroducing their newly refurbished Chinese restaurant, Ti Chen back into the market. With its rich red and black tones adorning the walls and furniture of this oriental eatery, Ti Chen has a lot more to offer.

Assisting Ti Chen in retaining its stature and reputation are two new chefs, Chef Lai Chong Seng and Dim Sum Chef Yau Kim Yew.

For this review, I had the opportunity to sample some of dishes created by the two chefs for Ti Chen.

Dishes by Chef Lai.

About the chef:
At 39 years of age, Chef Lai Chong Seng brings to the table 19 years of experience in the kitchen starting from the bottom with overseas stints in Seychelles and UAE. Overtime, Chef Lai built his portfolio comprising local and foreign experiences establishing his skills in Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine alongside magnificent fruit and vegetable carving. A member of the Penang Chef Association and the Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chef “Ho Yu” Association, Chef Lai is currently the Chinese Chef for Ti Chen of The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
Some of his signature dishes include Deep Fried Seafood Roll with Mango, Stewed Baby Spinach with Dried Scallop and Wolfberry, Steam Cod Fish with Green Ginger Sauce and Ice Mint Lychees with Melon.

Roasted Duck Salad and Mandarin Orange and Wafu Dressing.
This dish had my attention the moment it was presented, as the distinctive aroma of sesame oil wafted from the dressing (and a bit due to hunger). Usually I would just dismiss salads as just token greens on the menu, but this dish deserves some praise thanks to some of the components which brought up the standards of this salad. The mandarin/tamarind used was sweet, with little of the usual sharp citric acidity making this a noteworthy dish. The slices of duck had some weight to their taste, as it managed to stand up to the dressing of the salad. A good start to the tasting so far.
