Making rice desserts with the Jasmine Basmathi rice – Arroz con Leche Popsicles!

After the “success” of the Chicken Rice Burger I continued to experiment with another recipe but this time it is for desserts.

There isn’t much rice based desserts around are there? I mean let’s not talk about our local Malaysian kuih which mostly calls for glutinous rice. There’s very little substitute for glutinous rice as they have an entirely different texture all together. For the basmathi I think it is pretty versatile.

I asked some friends of mine who are chefs and as usual the ever reliable Rainier came to the rescue. He stumbled on a recipe on the net that uses rice and milk. I went through the recipe he sent and it triggered memories from my Venezuelan Gastronomic Fest in Renaissance Hotel KL in April 2012 and then the recent Peruvian Gastronomy Week at Ritz Carlton. At both events there was a dessert that uses 3 types of milk, rice and a dusting of cinnamon.

Ah great. That’s a good start. I knew and I remembered how those desserts tasted like. Further to that it is pretty simple to make without the need for me to even turn on the oven.

Sweet, I thought.

And thus I got into motion in making these “Rice Pudding Ice Pops” – an interpretation of the Arroz con Leche (a rice milk dessert) and forming it into popsicles as the final presentation.

Jasmine Rice – Basmathi King: my Chicken Rice Burger!

I haven’t had a burger for weeks. But I got this idea during the time when I was massively obsessed with burgers. My obsession has not waned, it’s just that I have not been well and my stomach somewhat rejects “heavy” food.

All I eat nowadays is porridge, soups, noodles and yes, porridge.

Bangkok Bloggers’ Tour with Smiling Albino – CentralWorld, Wat Pho, Golden Mount (Wat Saket)

I had a good time at the Digital Innovation Asia (DIA) – DIAsiaTourism Bangkok earlier in June. Was it just 1 month since then?
Time sure flies!
Ever since then I was very caught up with the Ramadan (fasting month) reviews and I’m glad to see the hard work paid off as many of my friends and readers had emailed me to say that it was a very useful list! If you missed out on the list you can view it –> HERE.

Meanwhile I will be heading to Chengdu next week for a media trip with Air Asia X. And after that a trip to Sandakan Sarawak with the Starwood Group of Hotels. So before I start my story on Chengdu (there would be pandas, majestic mountains & opera shows!) followed by the remote peaceful Sandakan, here’s my Bangkok Tour with the bloggers I met at the DIAsiaTourism Bangkok .

Cooking with Jasmine rice – the Basmathi variety

I have been very sick lately. And severely fatigued for no reason. If you have noticed, I had stopped eating burgers and I’m glad the ramadan reviews are over for this year. I still eat out (one can’t beat the convenience of that) but I’m making small changes to my diet as a whole. No I won’t give up my steaks, burgers and cakes completely, but I will replace a meal each day with something home-cooked.

Burgers in KL – Smashies Burger, Setapak

I have great admiration for the entrepreneurs of the recent burgers fad. Some are young F &B first timers, some are veterans in the industry and some are well, opportunists looking into making good money with the recent craze.

But whatever their motivations are, I’m only interested in the end product – are their burgers worth the calories and money?

At the recent, and I must say the most “memorable” and pomp launch to date for a burger joint, I asked Mr Will Soh, the founder of Smashies Burger in Setapak, KL why he decided on a burger joint.
And his story goes like this.

Harrods Cafe – KLCC for English tea, gourmet sandwiches and cakes

While most of us may be aware that there is a Harrods shop in KLCC, located strategically by the busy and most accessed escalator in Suria KLCC, how many of us know that there is one Harrods Cafe on the Ground Floor, near the entrance to KLCC from the Isetan side?
