Acme Bar & Coffee, Troika

So while everyone enjoyed their reunion dinners at home and ate Chinese, I steered clear of any Asian food for my reunion session. I had way too many yee sang and 8 course meals for the 2 weeks prior to CNY and was actually dying for something European and fancy.

Hence with my little family, I suggested Acme Bar and Coffee at Troika since I have read and heard raving reviews about the food.

I can tell you upfront that my meal was less than impressive. Or perhaps that’s the problem when you walked in with high expectations.

Nerovivo @Jalan Ceylon KL – Preview of the Xmas Set Menu

There are many things NEW at Nerovivo, Jalan Ceylon.

Nerovivo

Though not a new addition to the Italian dining scene in KL, Nerovivo recently shook things up a bit both internally and externally. Starting with physical renovations at it’s premises, it’s management was reshuffled as well with the appointment of a new Executive Chef Paolo Petris, a direct import from Italy as well as suave Restaurant Manager Alessandro Boneschi. Nerovivo completed the package with an ultra sexy Marcom personnel Rachel Lai who’s just very recently returned from South America.

Quite a dynamic team in place, I believe, and I had first experience of the new team at work just few weeks back.

Christmas Comes Early to Nerovivo

The occasion was a sneak preview of Nerovivo’s Christmas Eve Dinner & Christmas Day Lunch Menus. Awesome.. Italian food and Italian men on the menu.  :P

But I digress.

Chef Paolo started off the night’s programme by demonstrating his deft skills in shaping tortellini for our soup.

Dinner with One-Star Michelin Chef Baptiste Fournier @ Mezze Bistro, Damansara Heights

So I have said that I will be dining Chef Baptiste Fournier’s menu last Mon night and here what’s I had!

My main course: One of his specialty dish – The Duck Confit de Cannelloni. (RM70.00++ ala-carte).

It was reputed that Baptiste Fournier’s cuisine is honest, fresh and surprising. After my dinner, I had to concur. His love for using the freshest & most natural ingredients is prevalent in his dishes.

Levain Boulangerie & Patisserie, The real STONE OVEN bakery in KL!

It’s been a while since I was here – my last post dated May 2010 – HERE so I didn’t know what to expect. It had remained an insanely popular place since it’s opening, and from general feedback, I was informed that the quality of breads has since deteriorated, service is bad, it’s packed to the rafters everyday, etc etc.

Hence I had avoided a re-visit; til just a few days back, when a bunch of us decided that we would like to brunch out on BREADS on the 2nd day of Raya.

Thanks Pop for the pic!

La Bibliotheque, Avenue K – excited for alcoholic cakes but ended up…

DISAPPOINTED.

Yup, disappointed.

Disclaimer: I’m particular with my desserts so do take my reviews with a pinch of salt & more often than not; you might want to deduct perhaps 30% off the overall rating. Hahaha.

Anyhow, this place has been in my radar for while now. Cakes are always my TOP priority from my “new places or food-to-try list“. The list gets longer each day, and some places eventually forgotten; but never for cakes!

So even though the location was inconvenient (all the way in KL) & the venue less than ideal (in a club!) I planned, plotted, scheduled my time with some friends & finally after 2 weeks, stood happily in front of the cakes chiller one hot evening at La Bibliotheque, Avenue K.

Zipangu @ Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur – RM96++ weekend Japanese Buffet

I wonder if the popularity has dwindled for places like Zipangu, Kampachi & Iketeru – all these restaurants that were once considered the old dame of Japanese buffets, ever since the proliferation of cheaper, mass market Japanese buffets like Tao, Jogoya, Tenji, Saisaki & the likes.

When I walked in on a Sat afternoon for lunch, the restaurant was considerably packed, with the crowd much much better behaved & sedate compared to the monkeys people that you normally meet jostling for fresh sashimi & oysters at your other mid-priced buffets in town. I guess the “prestige” of being in Shang filters the crowd a bit.

Zipangu, for RM96++ /pax offers almost pure Jap fare for their weekend buffet. Fresh seafood was aplenty; though it was no longer sourced from Japan directly, and this poster in the lifts & at the front of their restaurant clearly stated their source of fresh produce.

Zipangu’s salmon is imported from Norway, beef and scallops from Australia, crab from Alaska, tuna from Indonesia and local herbs and greens from Cameron Highlands.

While I won’t say that patrons of Zipangu Japanese buffet are spoilt for choice, for choices were obviously lacking; I would say this is worth considering if you are looking for purely Japanese fare, & definitely worth your moolah if you are a Shang card holder. For it is “Buy One Free One” if you are.

The appetisers. Pretty much the norm.

The fresh sashimi. Nothing too fancy but you can expect the expected. Tuna (maguro), salmon, kampachi, octopus, hen clam, scallops, shime saba (mackarel) & butter fish.
