Weekend dim sum in KL – Dolly Dim Sum @ Avenue K

My preferred weekend brunch is dim sum, though sometimes i indulged in the overpriced western breakfast brunches in cafes.

My usual spots are Yuen Garden at SS2 and Jin Xuan at Uptown Damansara; both being relatively near and serves whole day dim sum.
For quick fixes, the dim sum at Sheng Kee Dessert House. 1U satisfies with its plump siew mai, prawn dumplings and the BBQ pork bun (char siew pau).

But after months of the same old places, I got bored of the usual dim sum joints around PJ area.

One weekend I decided that a drive to Dim Sum Dolly is warranted, after seeing some pretty images online and reading some articles about their offerings.

Pork Nasi Lemak KL/PJ – Chuup, Damansara Jaya and Brilliant Nasi Lemak, Uptown

I believe only a few places offer pork with nasi lemak.

I had one at 6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak (Aman Suria) some time back. I remembered there was one too at Ribs at Oasis (BU) but they had discontinued their nasi lemak since.

Ann’s Nasi Lemak at Imbi Market (link HERE) does not offer pork meat but only pork skin.

Brilliant Nasi Lemak at Uptown Damansara serves theirs with pork rendang.

I had visited twice since last month for my nasi lemak fix and I found it above average taste-wise but truly value for money price-wise!
The pork rendang is tasty, the sambal sweetish ( I prefer mine spicy), the anchovies and peanuts fresh but unfortunately the rice was almost bland.

Lastly, although the fried chicken wasn’t as tasty as Ali, Muthu or Ah Hock or Village Park I didn’t mind for the meat was tender and moist.

Other meal options at Brilliant Nasi Lemak besides well, nasi lemak are wan tan mee, curry noodles, herbal chicken noodles, fish head noodles, chicken hor fun, chicken rice, various snacks and desserts.
Just like a typical kopitiam, snacks like kaya and butter toast, coffee, and eggs are available and most are acceptable in price, portion and taste.

ROCKU Yakiniku (Japanese Restaurant) @Pavilion KL – buffet review

With the impending approach of GST and the current instability of fuel prices, increases of prices for good across all sectors are more likely than not to continue.
As a foodie I feel it most when I dine out.

And since food is one of the basic necessities in life, the rising cost affects all of us; the poor, the rich, the middle class.

It’s a sad fact. Dining out is now more painful than ever on the pocket and I’m sure there are many of us who had had experienced paying for a very expensive meal (north of RM100/pax) and left the restaurant feeling disappointed.

The truth is, an expensive meal doesn’t guarantee the best dining experience.
As a foodie, I’ve had my fair share of both the positive and negative.

Earlier this year, I’ve had a sudden thought. Wouldn’t it be helpful for my readers if I start a weekly/bi-monthly feature of F & B outlets that offers really good food with quality ingredients yet reasonably priced?

With that thought in mind, I decided that my first feature would be the newly launched ROCKU Yakiniku at Pavilion KL.

Chanai & Chaya Cafe TTDI market (morning) – apom telur, roti canai

Living in TTDI is a blessing.
The rental of my home increases steadily every year and I’m in the midst of looking for another house. But as long as I’m based in this neighbourhood, I’m thankful for its proximity to 1 Utama, The Curve, IKEA and almost every bank in the country.
I can obtain almost all produce and products I need within walking distance or no more than 3 km drive.

The TTDI wet market is one of the best managed markets (clean, orderly) in KL with the choicest ingredients. That said, prices are slightly higher, but negligible if you’re shopping for one or for a small family.

After my stocking up of eggs, chicken and greens, I occasionally make time for an apom.
Chanai & Chaya is a favourite of many. It is self-service but no one minds that.

To be frank I prefer the one at Om Shakti at Bangsar.
It is sweeter and creamier due to the addition of rich coconut milk.
Even with an egg added, a piece of apom here won’t cost RM3.

Om Shakti Chelo’s Appam: Plain – RM0.80.

Cheap and good steaks (and lamb too!) in PJ – The Manzo Project (espressolab), DJ

The folks behind espressolab are an industrious lot.
From coffee to food and prepackaged spices, blended fruit juices and brewed drinks, they are now venturing into another pet project, labeled The Manzo Project which aims to bring quality and affordable steaks to the masses.
