If budget is not issue and ultimate comfort is the main criteria for an accommodation choice in Melaka, my recommendation is swift and sure – Casa del Rio, a new boutique hotel sitting majestically on the riverbank, steeped in culture, built of symphonized influences of the many international cultures that have influenced Melaka – principally those of the Chinese (with the early arrival of China’s Admiral Cheng Ho), early Arabic traders, the Portuguese and Dutch is exactly where you should be.

Pork lard popiah in Melaka – Lwee Popiah, Bunga Raya & Oriental Cafe – Tengkera

I love spring rolls (popiah), both the wet and fried versions.

Hailing from Penang, my favourites are the one in Bee Hooi Cafe in Pulau Tikus, Padang Brown and another at Mount Erskine Hawker Centre (afternoons only). Popiah from Penang usually has added crabmeat (Mt. Erskine) or prawns (Bee Hooi) and a layer of lettuce between the fillings and the popiah skin.

I was in Melaka for a food trip while hosting Catherine Bell from Dish Magazine New Zealand in 2011. Here’s the video. We sampled 10 different food in the span of 8 hours!

Putu Piring @ Jalan Tengkera, Melaka – must try!

Putu Piring at Jalan Tengkera, Melaka is firmly on the “to eat ” list for anyone making a gastronomic journey to Melaka town. Though I generally avoid blogging about the same places commonly found online, I can’t help writing about this.

Other than Pak Putra Tandoori Chicken and Naan, a 2 hours drive to Melaka is well justified for these marvelous pillowy soft and fragrant putu piring. It is the best I have ever tasted, definitely none like this in any of the 10-15 Ramadan bazaars I visited every year and in any of the local markets.

Here’s a picture of a very happy me. Attainable only with good food. Other than a stack of cash of course.

Going to Penang? Everyone ask you for tau sar piah.

Going to Melaka? Everyone ask you for……..well, what else. Pineapple tarts.

I had some really good pineapple tarts before and frankly, these weren’t from the streets from Melaka. These were from some home enterprises that sells them only during Chinese New Year.
But for your all year round fix, take your chances and venture around Melaka town.

As you know I was in Melaka for the weekend courtesy of Casa del Rio. It was a wonderful hotel and I was grateful that I could rest in comfort and luxury after each food hunting episode on the hot sweltering roads of Melaka town.

Kaya – coconut jam : which do you prefer – lumpy or smooth?

I’m a lover of kaya (coconut jam) and as with all the food I consume, I’m anal about getting the best (according to my palate) texture and taste. Or at the very least it has to be to my liking.

I have always had high regards for Chef Johnny Fua and Sherson Lian. Both are one of the few local chefs that I truly respect. One is rather temperamental and cheeky while the other is endearing and cheeky.
I’ll leave it to you to figure out which is which 🙂

My previous dining experiences by Chef Johnny were at Upper Deck at GTower and another time during the launch of the Great Dinners of The World. After that I was honoured to be a guest of the Great Dinners of the World Appreciation Party where I met all 4 chefs again and had a superb dinner.
