Mezze, Jalan Kasah – Christmas and New Year Eve menu 2013

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: Casual-fine dining. Food here takes its influence from Spain, Italy, Morocco and Turkey and some are given a slight Asian twist. Good wine selection with an experienced resident sommelier.
Value for money lunch sets, live bands on Friday nights and an elegant, cosy dining ambiance.
What to order here: My last experience here was in April 2011. You can read about it –> HERE but do note that that is an outdated review.
For this session I only sampled the Vietnamese inspired beef noodles (part of the daily set lunch & I would confident recommend it!) and some items from the Christmas and NYE menu.

Overall experience: Some of the out-of-ordinary dishes offered on the Christmas and NYE set dinners are worth trying. Prices are acceptable for the quality and taste.
Besides, Mezze offers the flexible of adding dishes and wines to your basic set dinner if you wish, so you can order more to share and also plan your budget accordingly.

For the long story, read on. 🙂

Christmas and ushering in the new year are 2 celebrations that transcends races, cultures and religions. Everyone can celebrate Christmas & NYE and everyone should!

It can’t be denied that the key element of all celebrations is food. With Christmas less than 10 days away, chefs of every F & B establishment are ready with their menus for this festive season.
For Chef Yves of Mezze his Duck, Pork & Nut Terrine, foie gras pork sausages and lamb rump certainly hit the mark for me.

I have attached here both the Chrismas and New Year’s end menus here for your reference. The subsequent dishes you’ll see below are some of Chef’s creations that we got to sample yesterday. 🙂

The Restaurant @ The Club Saujana Resort – Christmas Set Dinner 2013 by Chef Alexander Waschl

The Restaurant @ The Club Saujana Resort took home 14 MIGF (Malaysia International Gourmet Festival) last year and 18 awards from the recent MIGF 2013, making it the Overall Best Restaurant this year. In the 3.5 years Chef Alex had called Malaysia home, he had worked tirelessly on improving the entire dining experience in The Restaurant; with the most obvious changes reflected in the menu, the service and in every component of the food he serves.

I had personally followed its progress and had continuously been impressed. To date, my dinners here (MIGF, Christmas, wine pairing) had not disappointed and if possible, every meal seems better than last!

For those who have been inquiring after seeing my FB/Instagram postings, here are the prices and pictures of the dishes for the upcoming Christmas menu. Do make your reservations early!

The menu: Prices varies according to the number of courses selected, which means you don’t have to choose between say, 2 mains because you can select any dish to make 3, 4, 5 or 6 courses.

Kaihomaru, Starhill – Japanese restaurant in KL

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: Semi-fine dining.  Japanese cuisine in a quiet and elegant atmosphere,
What to order here: Nigiri and Bara Chirashi Don because the vinegared rice is good. Though known for its sashimi, the ones I had in my sashimi set wasn’t up to my expectations, even for “KL standards” (let’s not even compare to the ones I had in Japan). Tempura and soba – just decent.
Overall experience: Set lunches are pretty value for money considering the quality, location and portion. However if budget is not an issue and even if I’m in KL area, I’m not likely to revisit.
Price: Set lunches are reasonable for the quality and taste. Ala carte and dinner meals are more expensive.
NOTE: I have only sampled their lunch sets so far.

For the long story, read on. :)

*************************************************************

I can’t eat Japanese food or soba or sashimi every week in Japan can I? After all I am living in KL, NOT Japan.
And though I’m always in search of a Japanese restaurant in KL that could at least replicate 70% of the taste of the food I had in Japan, I have not been diligently dining out and trying new outlets. For my sashimi fix, I would just take a 5 minutes walk over to Ichiro, 1 Utama where I’ll get quality sashimi and nigiri at reasonable prices in a cosy dining space.

Since my recent return from Tokyo, I’m more obsessed than ever with Japanese food. Since my memory and palate are still fresh from the soba, seafood and all the Japanese delicacies I sampled in Tokyo, I decided to try out a few places here which had favourable reviews both offline and online.

I started with Kaihomaru, which has positive reviews since its days in Federal Hotel in the Bukit Bintang area.

Four Points by Sheraton Penang – Tanjung Bungah: Days of beautiful sea, beach runs, Penang Hill hikes, burgers, food and shopping

When I was back in Penang earlier last month to witness the launch of the new Sheraton Four Points Penang, I was amazed by the change on this “other side” of town. My earlier visits this year has primarily been limited to the city centre, and the transformation on the road from Island Plaza to Sheraton Four Points Penang had me staring open-mouthed as the hotel shuttle drove past.

Peruvian cuisine – Qba Latin Bar & Grill, Westin KL – Chef Eduardo Vargas

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: A special Peruvian menu by Peruvian Chef Eduardo for the period of  27 November to 7 December 2013. Expect authentically prepared dishes using imported ingredients.
What to order here: Go for the QBA Grill Menu which gives diners a good introduction of Peruvian cuisine starting from the starters til dessert. Otherwise, pick and choose from the ala-carte. I would personally advise you to select from the ala-carte if you have a group of 3 pax or more. Else the set meal is a more affordable bet.
Overall experience: An authentic Peruvian experience that everyone should try at least once especially so when Peruvian cuisine are so limited in KL.
Price: Standard hotel dining prices. Have you signed up for the SPG card yet?  If no, it’s time to do so –>  http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/account/enroll/index.html 😀

For the long story, read on. :)
