My preferred weekend brunch is dim sum, though sometimes i indulged in the overpriced western breakfast brunches in cafes.
My usual spots are Yuen Garden at SS2 and Jin Xuan at Uptown Damansara; both being relatively near and serves whole day dim sum.
For quick fixes, the dim sum at Sheng Kee Dessert House. 1U satisfies with its plump siew mai, prawn dumplings and the BBQ pork bun (char siew pau).
But after months of the same old places, I got bored of the usual dim sum joints around PJ area.
One weekend I decided that a drive to Dim Sum Dolly is warranted, after seeing some pretty images online and reading some articles about their offerings.
Dim sum. Dim sum. Dim sum.
I could eat dim sum everyday, starting with good fishballs followed by har kau and siew mai.

What: Semi fine dining Chinese restaurant serving nouvelle Cantonese cuisine and Hong Kong dim sum.
What to order here: This marks my 3rd visit to Xin for dim sum. I have since tried almost everything on the dim sum menu. You can’t go wrong with the basics of prawn and pork dumplings. Desserts are a must.
The steamed pork bun (char siew) and the signature ‘Lau Sa Pau” is best eaten hot!
Overall experience: Good.
Price: RM6.50 – RM18.00 per portion of dim sum. Some comes in sets of 3 morsels.

Xin Cuisine is one of the “old but gold” Chinese dining restaurants in KL hotels.
Not many outlets in hotels are non-halal; and out of the few non-halal ones, even less serves consistent and good quality Chinese cuisine with justified prices.
At Xin, you are assured of taste and quality for the prices paid.
I’m a bao lover so both the Char Siew Bao and Lau Sa Pau (RM9.50) are staples for any of my dim sum meals.
This Lau Sa Pau is one of Xin’s signatures and it is simply divine. Tear the soft, thin skin apart to release the rich lava of salted egg custard within. Proceed to savour with caution as it is hot!
West Lake Garden Chinese Restaurant at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa unveils a new lunch-time a la carte dining experience, this time focusing on dim Sum and other home-style dishes. Diners can expect up to 100 varieties of dim sum all crafted by is the restaurant’s Dim Sum Master Chef Low Kim Ong and his culinary team.

What: Finely made dim sum; excellent in taste, generous portions, reasonable pricing and looks pretty too!
What to order here: 1st visit and I was suitably impressed. I enjoy every dim sum I tried and would list this as my favourite so far ( Disclaimer: I haven’t tried every outlet in Ipoh).
I was told that the must-trys are the pork pau but seriously, I doubt any of the dim sum here will disappoint you badly.
Overall experience: Really satisfied with what I had. I would certainly recommend Sun Kim Aik to my friends.

For my recent Ipoh trip, I had some dim sum at Ying Fa followed by another session at Chef Fatt. I was pretty satisfied at both, as the taste was pretty good in general and prices were fair.
However, as I stood in the midst of this bustling dim sum shop in Menglembu area I realized Sun Kim Aik is going to be of a completely different league all together.

What: Decent traditional dim sum with good bao and fried kueh kak (fried radish cake).
What to order here:
I was told that the must-trys are the pork bao but seriously, I doubt any of the dim sum here will disappoint you badly.
Overall experience: Satisfied with what I had. Not my top choice for dim sum in Ipoh though.

I was here before my visit to Sun Kim Aik so my expectations were still under manageable levels. Now I have got to admit that I still prefer Sun Kim Aik over Ying Fa (which has shut down), Sun Kok Kee at Bercham and even here – Chef Fatt.
Still one has to admit that Chef Fatt has its merits. For one it is right in town, so the outlet is a breeze to locate – walking distance from the trinity of famous dim sum in Ipoh – Foh Sun, Ming Court and Yoke Fook Moon. It does offers a large variety of dim sum, some pretty unique. Prices are fair enough for Ipoh city and service is pretty decent.
Here’s what we begin with.
Dim sum at Celestial Court is, aptly, a celestial experience.
The purists would argue that dim sum without pork is not dim sum. Well, I strongly urge them to sample some of Chef Ken Liew’s offerings then.
Some of his creations mimics the texture and taste of pork so well, you won’t be able to tell! An example would be this Juicy Shanghainese dumpling with egg strips and Chinese spinach served in chicken broth – RM18/portion.
