Halal Nyonya food in Melaka – Seri Nyonya @ Hotel Equatorial Melaka

Everybody is in the search of the best nyonya restaurants in Melaka.
The colorful, bustling historial state is a magnet for the Peranakan culture; be it food, fashion or history related.

While choices of good Nyonya restaurants are innumerable, there are some that I personally endorse, and would spend good money on.
These are (in no particular order):
Samfu Restaurant, Mimosa Hotel (photos/review here)
Bulldog Cafe (photos/review here)
Unicorn Cafe (photos/review here)

If you were to ask me how many Nyonya restaurants I’ve dined in in Melaka itself before shortlisting the above, here’s the list:

I’ve (with local Malaccan in tow) visited and dined at the outlets as below:
1. Makko
2. Nyonya Sayang (Jalan TMR 21, Taman Melaka Raya)
3. Ole Sayang (Taman Melaka Raya)
4. Donald & Lily’s
5. Nancy’s kitchen
6. Song Nyonya Taste Cuisine
7. Aunty Lee (when she was still the cook in 2011)
8. Amy Heritage
9. Unicorn Cafe
10. Bulldog Cafe
11. Kafe Lin

And in March 2016 I added another Nyonya restaurant into my list, this time the only halal-certified Nyonya restaurant in Melaka, Seri Nyonya in Hotel Equatorial Melaka.

Penang Char kuey teow – Sisters Place, Pacific Place, Ara Damansara PJ

It would seem that I am on the char kuey teow trail, since I just posted about char kuey teow yesterday.

It is a coincidence really, because my favourite food is definitely not char kuey teow. It so happened that I was at Sisters’ again this evening and this marked my 2nd visit this year to try the much acclaimed char kuey teow.
My conclusion? The char kuey teow here is not impressive.

Not at all.

For me, the best chicken rice in SEREMBAN is @ Continental Hotel

While hordes of hungry diners wait imprudently for their Diamond Chicken Rice and tolerated poor service at Restoran Chai Hong, we tucked into cheap, gratifying chicken rice topped with succulent, smooth chicken at this unassuming chicken rice stall within the Continental Hotel building.

This no name stall is manned by a friendly, patient and efficient old couple.
If anyone deserves business, it would be them.

Hyotan Subang SS15 : Japanese Omakase for RM155++ for 2 pax!

RM155++ (RM190) for 2 pax for an Omakase meal?
Is this an early April Fool’s joke?

Well, folks, April is still a full 48 hours away so this isn’t a joke though I admit that I was personally just as taken aback as you are when I got wind of this promotion.

At that price point, this could very well be the cheapest Omakase in KL/PJ!

SALTED EGG YOLK cheesecake, Century Egg Cheesecake – Moody Cow Cafe, Penang, Malaysia

UPDATE:
3rd April 2016:

This is my 2nd time savouring the rich, unique cheesecakes from Moody Cow Cafe Penang, courtesy of my godsis who is in KL for a short holiday.
That also means I didn’t have to put up with the cafe staff surly attitude since I did not have to visit the cafe myself. Thank god!   DSC06245

The century egg cheesecake is one of Moody Cow’s latest creation and as weird as it sounds, it is actually not as terrible as it sounds.

In fact, Moody Cow’s range of cheesecakes are good (based on those I’ve tried) and their durian salted egg yolk (Hybrid) is one of my personal favourites.
It is just the service that I couldn’t tolerate. Thus if someone is willing to buy it for me, I’ll eat them.

The 2 cakes I got this time are the century egg cheesecake and their best-seller cempedak cheesecake.

Verdict on the century egg cheesecake:
Rich chocolate base and thick cheese provided the main flavours for the cake.
Toppings of sweet spicy anchovies (ikan bilis) and peanuts plus the gelatinous century egg provided the texture.

So imagine this now; with each chew in your mouth (take a forkful from top to bottom and don’t miss the century egg!)  you get sticky thick cheese, sweet and spicy and nutty and crunchy whenever you bit into any of the anchovies and peanuts plus the rubbery century egg with its creamy yolk and distinctive odor thrown in.

Too much?
I agree.

Foul?
No, it is not.

An acquired taste for sure!

Verdict on the cempedak cheesecake:
This was superb!
Pungently rich in both the flavours and scent department thanks to generous amount of cempedak flesh embedded within the cake, the top layer is a lighter mousse-like layer with cempedak flesh blended in while the lower cheese layer is the denser, richer layer.
2 other layers are a slab of rich chocolate and a base of dense chocolate cake (more like brownie).

Thanks Min Sing for the treat!
I’m keeping an eye out for future “interesting” creations from Moody Cow and I’m seriously wondering what could be next!

Sabah Tuaran mee in PJ – SS3 – Ah Soon Kor restoran

Many sacrifices are made when one leaves home and migrates to another city, state or country.
Home flavours is one of them. For Penangites we have heard it all the time, they have the best char kuey teow and prawn mee.
For Ipoh it is the hor fun and dim sum. Melaka lay claim on the most authentic Nyonya fare (though I personally find that debatable) while the east coast has their nasi kerabu and lekor.
Sarawak’s laksa and kolo mee are legendary.

Now, what about Sabah?

Other than seafood and fish noodles (I’ve only been to KK twice) I drew a blank myself. It was only nearly a year ago that I knew of “tuaran mee” and that it is available in KL!

A friend who is a Sabahan gushed positively of Ah Soon Kor’s Tuaran mee.
It took me a year to get myself here for I’ve wrongly assumed that the noodles are only available in the mornings. Since weekday mornings is not an option, weekend mornings were all I had.

And trust me, weekend mornings are just as difficult to secure a slot.
