Chinese New Year 2011 is in less than 3 weeks !! Man, I’ve got to say this cliched statement “Time sure flies!“. 😉
We have now come to that time of the year again, where the ubiquitous Yee Sang makes it’s appearance during every dinner in every restaurant.

I’m not complaining of course. On the contrary, I’m actually looking forward to some boisterous CNY dinners with my friends to usher in a new beginning in this year of the Rabbit. :yes:
To start the ball rolling (or the tossing going ) I tossed my first Yee Sang at Zuan Yuan, One World Hotel just last week.

To the uninitiated, yee sang is not so much about eating the dish but more of the food-play as the key element of the “yee sang” involves tossing the ingredients as high as possible and mixing it all vigorously while shouting out loud all the positive vibes & wishes you desire for the coming year.
This is a very auspicious act as it portends to financial and personal success where future ventures will hopefully “rise and reach high levels”.

“For $! For better health! For better opportunities in life! Toss it all high, higher & higher!!”

Moo Cow Frozen Yogurt, Hartamas Shopping Centre

The yogurt craze has hit town.
Who/which brand has pioneered it is debatable (Tutti Fruitti? Kindori? ) & which is the best is remains an open contest (Tutti Fruitti? Kindori? Snogurt- SS15? Spoon at MV?), but seeing the wave of obsession that hit cupcakes, macarons & doughnuts, I’m pretty certain yogurt could take off in popularity just as those desserts had.

And just last weekend, I discovered another yogurt kiosk while I was Plaza Damas for desserts at the Haute Food Company. Yup, Li bakes wonderful desserts -(review HERE & HERE) & that is about all the reasons I have to head to Plaza Damas.

However, with MOO COW yogurt kiosk on the 2nd floor of Hartamas Shopping Centre, I might come here even more regularly than before! 😉

Lucky me was staying in this very hotel just last week, all thanks to the kind hospitality of Tune Hotels. 😉
It was a great New Year gift & an eye-opening trip at the same time. Would you believe it, this is my virginal trip to Sarawak!

There was a lot of drama prior to checking in (all that in my next post) so imagine my happiness & relief when I received my electronic card to my room. The comfortable 5-star bed & fluffy pillows was heaven-sent!

E42T : 42 East Restaurant & Bar, TTDI – Head there for PORK RIBS & Margaritas!

The stretch of Lorong Rahim Kajai 14 in TTDI; where just a year or 2 ago the pub scene was (supposedly) pioneered & dominated by Sid’s Pub, is now hosting a pub at almost every alternate shoplot.
That’s not a bad thing I suppose, since each pub strives to up the ante by offering better value for their food, ambiance & most importantly, the alcohol 😉 , thus keeping a healthy competition going & also giving us options for our after-hours chillax time.

Since I’m not much of a drinker, I’m more appreciative of pubs that offers a good ambiance, which can be as simple as providing comfortable & roomy sitting arrangements where if I were to turn or raise my arm, I won’t hit anyone!
The appropriate noise levels matters as well, cos I’m just peeved if I’m required to shout to be heard & lastly, I adore pubs that offers good grub to fill my tummy. LOL.

42 East seems to offer all that at the moment. Even the common problem of me having to order water whenever I’m at a pub (because most other pubs offers only soft drinks as a non-alcoholic alternative & I avoid soft drinks as well) is taken care of here with the healthy & delicious fruit mixes available.

Orange + Banana & Peach + carrot. My vote goes for the Banana & Orange, as the carrot one had too much carrot residue. I think they blended instead of juicing it.

The highlight here is the baby back pork ribs of course. We had a slab of the one glazed with Connor’s stout, which was my favourite & another which is Hot & Spicy, which wasn’t all that hot or spicy. LOL!

The Haute Food Co @ Plaza Damas, Hartamas – one of the best cafe for cakes & desserts in KL!

My first 2 visits to the Haute Food Company (review HERE ) had me hooked on their simple but luscious desserts.
Hence it’s not surprising that this little quaint cafe has since become one of my top choices for my desserts fix, especially on weekends. Likewise, friends & clients whom I’ve recommended has always gave positive feedback too. :good:

A little digression here: During the recent Christmas season, Plaza Damas had an actual horse – drawn carriage giving customers complimentary rides. Isn’t that so fun??

Back to the desserts; the post & pictures below is an accumulation from my many visits. I have sampled almost all of her (Ms. Li) desserts but there is always something new whenever I visit so I’m far from bored yet. 😉

The Tiramisu here comes in both alcoholic or non-alcoholic form. I have always opted for the alcoholic one (RM16) which is pretty heady due to its generous content of alcohol. But the search for the best tiramisu in town is still on-going, for as much as we like Haute Food’s version for its alcohol load, we opined that the mascarpone cheese layers is a tad too mild in taste.

Marufuku, Jaya One – slurpilicious, fresh & bouncy udon. Oh..it’s cheap too!

I’m have never been a fan of noodles though someone is. I think the problem lies with the fact that most noodles dishes tasted generic to me; and that is probably due to the fact that most wan tan mee, hokkien mee, curry mee, kuey teow thng, etc stalls sourced from more or less the same supplier for their business. (Let’s not include the mid/high-end restaurants that makes their own / import their noodles, keeping in the theme of “noodles under RM10”)

Different stalls, different preparations, different ingredients, different taste, yes; but essentially, when you bite into your noodles, it tasted bland & mediocre no? Minus the soup and all that extras?

It took a few trips, but eventually I fell under the “Marufuku spell“.

Addicted?
No no, I won’t say that. But when it rains, when the mood dips, when the tummy calls for something simple to keep the body going, Marufuku offers that simple solace in each bowl.

Nebayaki Udon. (includes a seafood dumpling, 1 prawn tempura, an egg, mushrooms & beancurd skin) RM10.
