Uncle Tetsu Cheese Zuccotto – Review

After gushing about the delicious-ness of Uncle Tetsu’s Signature Cheesecake (link), I vowed to try the Uncle Tetsu Cheese Zuccoto Cheesecake.
However, procrastination and a hectic schedule set in.

This week, I finally went over to pick up 2 Cheese Zuccoto Cheesecake courtesy of Uncle Tetsu. I also managed to sample the Signature Cheesestick.

Weekend dim sum in KL – Dolly Dim Sum @ Avenue K

My preferred weekend brunch is dim sum, though sometimes i indulged in the overpriced western breakfast brunches in cafes.

My usual spots are Yuen Garden at SS2 and Jin Xuan at Uptown Damansara; both being relatively near and serves whole day dim sum.
For quick fixes, the dim sum at Sheng Kee Dessert House. 1U satisfies with its plump siew mai, prawn dumplings and the BBQ pork bun (char siew pau).

But after months of the same old places, I got bored of the usual dim sum joints around PJ area.

One weekend I decided that a drive to Dim Sum Dolly is warranted, after seeing some pretty images online and reading some articles about their offerings.

Pork Nasi Lemak KL/PJ – Chuup, Damansara Jaya and Brilliant Nasi Lemak, Uptown

I believe only a few places offer pork with nasi lemak.

I had one at 6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak (Aman Suria) some time back. I remembered there was one too at Ribs at Oasis (BU) but they had discontinued their nasi lemak since.

Ann’s Nasi Lemak at Imbi Market (link HERE) does not offer pork meat but only pork skin.

Brilliant Nasi Lemak at Uptown Damansara serves theirs with pork rendang.

I had visited twice since last month for my nasi lemak fix and I found it above average taste-wise but truly value for money price-wise!
The pork rendang is tasty, the sambal sweetish ( I prefer mine spicy), the anchovies and peanuts fresh but unfortunately the rice was almost bland.

Lastly, although the fried chicken wasn’t as tasty as Ali, Muthu or Ah Hock or Village Park I didn’t mind for the meat was tender and moist.

Other meal options at Brilliant Nasi Lemak besides well, nasi lemak are wan tan mee, curry noodles, herbal chicken noodles, fish head noodles, chicken hor fun, chicken rice, various snacks and desserts.
Just like a typical kopitiam, snacks like kaya and butter toast, coffee, and eggs are available and most are acceptable in price, portion and taste.

Cheap steaks alert – Bruno’s Steaks & Burgers @ Desa Sri Hartamas

I have steaks almost every week, usually chilled Australian beef bought from AEON, seasoned lightly with salt and pepper followed by a few minutes each side on a hot pan.
It is simple, inexpensive at about RM32 – RM40/kg and I usually go for a 250g portion per meal.
Cooking my own steaks/beef certainly saves me time, effort and money paying for a similar sized steak at a F & B establishment.

But when I heard of Bruno’s reputation of serving good steaks (sous vide!) at incredibly prudent prices at Hartamas I was instantly intrigued.
Now this is something I should share with my readers and friends; I had thought.

Most of my friends tell me that they can’t cook and would rather pay for a steak. And if possible, could I recommend one that won’t cost them an arm or a leg (places like Prime comes into mind)?

So here I am, in the name of research, sitting in the middle of an empty land staring at this fella who I’ve read was a banker turned chef and had chose to man a compact stall that stands out-of-place in the middle of the busy Hartamas area, instead of donning corporate suits and slaving in an air-conditioned office.

Afternoon tea and cakes in KL @ Bread Lounge, GTower

Too many characterless cakes, too many cafes and too little time.

I’ve stuck to Swich for my cake fix for some time. At least the cakes are imaginative and there are new creations every week.

But today I’ve finally visited Bread Lounge at GTower, and sampled some of Chef Eugene (Tanzini/Upper Deck) creations.
Many of his pastries are based on French techniques, and for anything chocolate, it is Valrhona and Valrhona only.

ROCKU Yakiniku (Japanese Restaurant) @Pavilion KL – buffet review

With the impending approach of GST and the current instability of fuel prices, increases of prices for good across all sectors are more likely than not to continue.
As a foodie I feel it most when I dine out.

And since food is one of the basic necessities in life, the rising cost affects all of us; the poor, the rich, the middle class.

It’s a sad fact. Dining out is now more painful than ever on the pocket and I’m sure there are many of us who had had experienced paying for a very expensive meal (north of RM100/pax) and left the restaurant feeling disappointed.

The truth is, an expensive meal doesn’t guarantee the best dining experience.
As a foodie, I’ve had my fair share of both the positive and negative.

Earlier this year, I’ve had a sudden thought. Wouldn’t it be helpful for my readers if I start a weekly/bi-monthly feature of F & B outlets that offers really good food with quality ingredients yet reasonably priced?

With that thought in mind, I decided that my first feature would be the newly launched ROCKU Yakiniku at Pavilion KL.

Bingsu Cafe – Uptown Damansara

Teatime on a Sunday: I had this enjoyable bingsu at the new Bingsu Cafe at Damansara Uptown yesterday.
It was the best respite from the sweltering heat though it was a costly one.

The basic Injeolmi Bingsu (peanuts, soy powder, almonds & rice cakes (I think) & shaved ice cost RM12.90.
RM12 – 14 is pretty much equivalent to an affogato at most cafe, and by comparison I guess a bingsu is “more worth it”  since it comes with more toppings.
However I added a scoop of durian ice cream since I was hungry. The extra scoop cost RM9.40 (see the receipt – RM7.90 + RM1.50) so in total this bowl cost me RM22+.
