Chef Chee Keong, previously from Samfu Restaurant is back!

The flamboyant chef took a break when he left Samfu but subsequently resurfaced at Baba 90 where his throes of fans from Singapore and Malaysia breathed a sigh of relief and kept him busy with their hungry demands. Reservations for weekends are almost impossible without a few weeks’ notice.

Well, Baba 90, though housed in a charming Melaka baba house, could only accommodate a few tables so it was certainly insufficient for hungry Nyonya diners.

Imagine my disbelief when I was introduced to Nyonya Delights recently and finding out that they were operating for 5 years in this tiny space!
5 years serving good, homely Nyonya dishes and I’ve only knew about it now??

Peranakan Patisserie, ‘Kueh-kery’™ and Tea room – it does gives one pause doesn’t it?

Fancy branding, unique concept plus a nicely written online article about the inspiration of how this “Peranakan Patisserie, ‘Kueh-kery’™” came about – I must admit; it got me rushing over with high expectations and anticipation.

Roti Canai Kayu Arang @ Bachang, MELAKA – roti nachos, best nasi lemak, roti tampal

Whether the charcoal (kayu arang) enhances the roti canai in either aroma or taste is debatable.

I for one, couldn’t detect any enhancements.
It could be that our orders were roti tampal (eggs + roti canai) and Roti Nachos (a pizza with roti canai as base) and since both were not plain roti, the presumably added smoky flavours were lost on us.

My monthly trips to Melaka for both business and leisure gave me much opportunities to explore the bustling historically rich city, both culturally and much of its culinary offerings.

I’ve published an article on the best Nyonya chang, the best Nyonya kuih you can find in Melaka, the best cafes to hang out at and now, the best restaurant to satisfy your Nyonya cuisine cravings, which is of course, synonymous with the Melaka state.

Halal Nyonya food in Melaka – Seri Nyonya @ Hotel Equatorial Melaka

Everybody is in the search of the best nyonya restaurants in Melaka.
The colorful, bustling historial state is a magnet for the Peranakan culture; be it food, fashion or history related.

While choices of good Nyonya restaurants are innumerable, there are some that I personally endorse, and would spend good money on.
These are (in no particular order):
Samfu Restaurant, Mimosa Hotel (photos/review here)
Bulldog Cafe (photos/review here)
Unicorn Cafe (photos/review here)

If you were to ask me how many Nyonya restaurants I’ve dined in in Melaka itself before shortlisting the above, here’s the list:

I’ve (with local Malaccan in tow) visited and dined at the outlets as below:

3. Ole Sayang (Taman Melaka Raya)
4. Donald & Lily’s
5. Nancy’s kitchen
6. Song Nyonya Taste Cuisine
7. Aunty Lee (when she was still the cook in 2011)
8. Amy Heritage
9. Unicorn Cafe
10. Bulldog Cafe
11. Kafe Lin

And in March 2016 I added another Nyonya restaurant into my list, this time the only halal-certified Nyonya restaurant in Melaka, Seri Nyonya in Hotel Equatorial Melaka.
