For Sale: Traditional, fluffy Taiwanese Egg Cake with Salted Egg Yolk Kaya

Remember the Taiwan Original Cake that was all the hype recently?

Though many find it bland and said it was overrated, personally I enjoyed both the original and cheese flavour.
Yes, the taste is mild, but people don’t understand that it was meant to be that way.

It is a TRADITIONAL egg sponge cake. I mean, what do you expect an egg sponge to taste like?
Besides, as a baker, I thought it was a darn fine egg sponge!

Molten salted egg yolk cake @ Softcore Sunway

What do you do on a Sunday?
My Sundays are pretty standard if I’m in town. I hike, I write and I explore for new dining options.

I’ve known about Softcore for sometime but the location was a deterrent. Sunway is one area I avoid like a plague.
On a Sunday however, traffic and parking woes aren’t as bad. Since I had a willing driver last Sunday, we found ourselves in the spacious and minimalist decorated outlet in less than 20 minutes from Bangsar.

I eyed the outdoor seating longingly but it was presently occupied by 2 large groups.

‘Darn‘, I had thought. There goes my photos.

HONG KONG : Best croissants at Urban Bakery, Hysan Place

Was Le Bread Days the first to offer the salted egg yolk (liusha) croissants?
In Malaysia yes perhaps, but certainly not in the world.

urban bakery hong kong - salted egg yolk croissant

Urban Bakery in Hong Kong might very well be the first in the world to pipe luscious, salted egg yolk custard into a french made croissant.
Using A.O.C. graded ingredients, Urban Bakery imports the ingredients/croissant/bread from France and then freshly baked at shop all day long.

The best Salted Egg Yolk Croissant : Where? Le Bread Days/Bake Plan/The Bread Shop?

I had personally thought that other bakeries were slow to pick up on the salted egg yolk croissant craze after the initial uproar for the famed croissants at Le Bread Days.

The Bread Shop at Bukit Damansara rose to the occasion about 3 weeks after the chaos. Sadly feedback was negative from my trusted foodies friends, all citing poor quality for both the croissant itself and the salted egg yolk custard filling.
For the price it was reported to be a poor imitation of Le Bread Days’.

Just as quickly, I lost interest to try it, though I remained curious.

Just last weekend my good friend William alerted me of a similar croissant, this time in Bake Plan SS2.
I wasted no time to get my grubby hands on 3 on a hot Sunday afternoon and happily enough, the effort was it.
I was pretty satisfied with the croissant.

Then another friend gave me an idea. How about a lowdown on all 3 croissants simultaneously? I could then pass out a renewed verdict!

I had thought why not, since that would be the question on everyone’s mind now. Or at least for those who had been following the whole saga from day one.
