List of Roti Babi in Penang: Pulau Tikus market, Padang Brown, New Cathay, Chuan Bee

Roti Babi isn’t something common.
In Klang Valley one of the VERY FEW places that offers roti babi is Yut Kee and POKC at Damansara Uptown.
Unfortunately the version at Yut Kee is a dismal thick pocket of bread with little meat and some onions. POKC’s version was better but expensive.

Back in Penang I grew up eating the roti babi at Song River Cafe, Gurney Drive and though I remembered it was greasy, the fillings were the bomb.

I haven’t visited the stall since I left Penang more than a decade ago and when I went last month I found out that I’ll never be able to enjoy the roti babi again.

List of Penang famous apom manis – Swee Kong (Ravi’s), New Cathay (Mr, Mrs Ravi), Apom Guan & Bee Hooi (Uncle Teh)

I grew up eating apom manis on a daily basis, I kid you not.

The famous Penang apom manis stalls were all conveniently located near me as I lived in Pulau Tikus.
Zipping around on my trusty little bicycle/bike (depending on my age I owned either one) I would visit them based on my whim; what do I favour that day?
Would it be the sweet, coconuty crepes from Apom Guan? Or an added egg one from either the Ravi/Nathan of Swee Kong or Mr Ravi at Sin Hup Aun coffeeshop?

Apom Guan vs Apom Chooi PENANG – Review

It is an inevitable thing, to compare both.
I grew up eating both, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve never had a preference of one over the other.

It was a matter of who has a shorter queue at my time of arrival, though I tend to head to Apom Guan more often. It was merely habit, and also because it is nearer to the Loh Han Guo drink stall that I always patronized.

Onde Onde Desa Park City – Penang food

Onde Onde at Desa Park City aims to serve well prepared Malaysian favorites. When I was invited to have lunch here I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’m a Penangite, and frankly, I have an even fussier tastebud than most of my peers.

Except for a few, Penang food in KL hasn’t been too promising. Even for Penang One; where selected hawkers are in collaboration with the owner and they bring the fresh ingredients, soup and condiments directly from the hawkers themselves daily from individual stalls in Penang didn’t wow me entirely.
Food can be inconsistent and I only favour their Char Kuey Teow, Koay Teow Thng and Mua Chee. The rest is just decent.

So I didn’t have high expectations walking into Onde Onde, though I must say I left pretty satisfied.

Like all Nyonya inspired eateries, the nostalgic ornaments and oriental touches are present. Service is brisk and food arrived swiftly.

I started with the char kuey teow; probably one of the strictest litmus test for any “Penang cuisine” eatery. This was a let-down. Any Penangite can tell you that just from the picture below.

Lorong Seratus Tahun @ SS2 for Penang food – curry mee, char kuey teow, chendol

Lorong Seratus Curry Mee had its humble beginnings from Penang.
At the early stage of the business, it was just a hawker stall selling Curry Mee in the street named “Lorong Seratus Tahun” in Penang.
After forty years, the LST brothers cleverly expanded the business to a food and beverage outlet business model; which is essentially a café with fast service, WIFI and air conditioning.
They have since introduced their licensing system and have been encouraging like-minded entrepreneurs to share in their success and make LST a well-known Malaysian brand.
