Peranakan Patisserie, ‘Kueh-kery’™ and Tea room – it does gives one pause doesn’t it?
Fancy branding, unique concept plus a nicely written online article about the inspiration of how this “Peranakan Patisserie, ‘Kueh-kery’™” came about – I must admit; it got me rushing over with high expectations and anticipation.
As someone who is obsessed about Nyonya food (try following my 14 nyonya restaurants eating adventures in MELAKA HERE and you will know what I mean), I daresay that I have a good idea of how a great Nyonya meal should be like.
That said, I understand that there are variations in recipes in every Nyonya family, as with every proclaimed Nyonya restaurant in town.
While I can confidently recommend a good Baba Nyonya restaurant in Melaka, my Klang Valley list is fewer.
Baba Nyonya by Sambal Chilli was a recent discovery for me.
Atria @ DJ was their first outlet while the recently launched Avenue K outlet is a fresh, beautiful, artsy place that I just love to hang out at – if it wasn’t so far from home!
I was part of the 80% of the tourists to Melaka once, only knowing of Baba Charlie and steadfastly visiting BC each time I’m in Melaka.
I swooned over their bongkong and absolutely love the durian apam. I even wrote a glowing review of it.
Then things changed.
On one visit I was disappointed with the kuih. Perplexed, it hit me that the quality is sliding south faster than our ringgit.
Deprived of good kuih suddenly, I started to bug my ever reliable guide and friend Daniel Cerventus. “Eh, Melaka only one place got kuih ah?”
Overworked yet ever obliging, he was coerced into getting me other options, for he realized he will never hear the end of it from me if he didn’t.

I just got back from a sampling session at Parkroyal Hotel KL. This evening also marks my first time chatting with the respected Chef Debbie Teoh, an established and respected chef in the realm of Nyonya cooking and history.
Baba Charlie Nyonya Kuih is a must if you’re visiting Melaka. Operating in a traditional wooden house located in a tiny alley opposite the Masjid Tengkera, the location may be easy to miss; but do look for the red “Baba Charlie” signage on Jalan Tengkera and that will help point you to the right direction.
If all else fail, there’s always GPS/Waze. That would certainly end all your navigational woes. 🙂
