Contrary to what some may think, leaving my job wasn’t an easy decision. I wasn’t exactly rejoicing in triumph. I left with a heavy heart.
But I walked out knowing I have done my best, and accepted that there are times when one has to admit defeat & this is one of them. Some things are just not within my field or control to change.

Anyhow, when things gets low, desserts are the way to go. (Eh, it rhythms!! )
I have heard of how Empire Shopping Gallery has become THE place for desserts, which is true, considering the amount of eateries here that specialised in sweets & pretty pastries.

This time round I decided to check out The Vanilla Place.

DISAPPOINTED.

Yup, disappointed.

Disclaimer: I’m particular with my desserts so do take my reviews with a pinch of salt & more often than not; you might want to deduct perhaps 30% off the overall rating. Hahaha.

Anyhow, this place has been in my radar for while now. Cakes are always my TOP priority from my “new places or food-to-try list“. The list gets longer each day, and some places eventually forgotten; but never for cakes!

So even though the location was inconvenient (all the way in KL) & the venue less than ideal (in a club!) I planned, plotted, scheduled my time with some friends & finally after 2 weeks, stood happily in front of the cakes chiller one hot evening at La Bibliotheque, Avenue K.

In celebration of Duan Wu Jie or Rice Dumplings Festival which falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (CHINESE CALENDAR), the imaginative chefs at Zuan Yuan added a new twist to the traditional recipe by offering enticing flavours such as Five Grain Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Sliced Australian Abalone, Eight Treasure Glutinous Rice Dumpling Hong Kong Style & Steamed Sweet Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Red Date Paste.

RM58++ per dumpling.

Round 2– Carrot cake, Charcoal cake & Tiramisu! @ Hummingbirds Coffee Bar @ Beatrice Looi Boutique, Telawi Bangsar

After the initial euphoria of discovering a new dessert outlet last week (WASABI macaron, Red Velvet & Durian Cake HERE!) , I couldn’t wait to make my way back for more; especially since I was informed that their Tiramisu kick-ass & they have some new variaties such as the carrot cake which was just launched this week.

The opportunity to swing by again presented itself soon enough; after a particularly long harried day & the need for some comforting sweets just couldn’t be ignored any longer.

Unlike most cafes on this street which are bustling with human traffic & conversation; The Hummingbirds Coffee Bar is laid-back with very comfortable & pretty chairs (I love those chairs! ) & most importantly; quiet.
Stepping in, I relaxed immediately, proceeded to drop my heavy bags at my favourite corner & strutted my way to the cakes display counter for my sugar fix.

UPDATE: 2nd round – HERE –> Carrot Cake, Charcoal Cake & Tiramisu!

The hunt for the best Red Velvet remained on-going.
I must have tried every Red Velvet I’ve seen/came across in KL. Some I have blogged about, some I haven’t (Sigh…yes yes… my backlogs are piling up) but I promise I will ermmm…eventually finish posting all of them.

But for now let’s just focus on the ones worthy of mention shall we?
The best (IMHO) was the one at A Taste Boutique , but their boutique is kinda far (in Putra Heights) & their kiosk at Sunway Pyramid doesn’t carry the Red Velvet cake most of the time. Also, it’s been a while since I eaten theirs, so I’m not sure if it still taste the same. Anyhow, it was SO GOOD that it had left a lasting impression on me.

For me, a good Red Velvet is a combination of luxuriant flavour from the sponge & perfect smooth light cream cheese frosting. The one at A Taste Boutique was a fair example of a Red Velvet that I like, followed closely by another that’s baked by a friend FBB; and you can try it at The Bee, Jaya One since he supplies the cake there.

Today, I’m pleased that I have finally found another Red Velvet cake worth blogging about. At the most unlikely places really; right here on Telawi 3, Bangsar, in a designer’s boutique!

Hummingbirds Coffee Bar shares the same space with Beatrice Looi Boutique; and exudes a most charming vibe with special made to order blue high-back comfy chairs (love those chairs, so pretty! ) & an impressive list of coffee from Germany. There were even some funky drinks like Cucumber Oh La la that is alcoholic @ RM25+, (how does one mix cucumber with alcohol is beyond me) & a very good selection of tea. This “cafe” is just perfect for that afternoon tête-à-tête with a BFF.

Humble Beginnings’ Mille Crepes – Bangsar & Austin Chase outlets

Mille crepes are pretty “elusive” in KL. The popular (and likely the only few) outlets that is synonymous with mille crepes are the infamous Nadeje, which is in Melaka, or Food Foundry in Happy Mansion, PJ Section 17.

Moo Cow Frozen Yogurt, Hartamas Shopping Centre

The yogurt craze has hit town.
Who/which brand has pioneered it is debatable (Tutti Fruitti? Kindori? ) & which is the best is remains an open contest (Tutti Fruitti? Kindori? Snogurt- SS15? Spoon at MV?), but seeing the wave of obsession that hit cupcakes, macarons & doughnuts, I’m pretty certain yogurt could take off in popularity just as those desserts had.

And just last weekend, I discovered another yogurt kiosk while I was Plaza Damas for desserts at the Haute Food Company. Yup, Li bakes wonderful desserts -(review HERE & HERE) & that is about all the reasons I have to head to Plaza Damas.

However, with MOO COW yogurt kiosk on the 2nd floor of Hartamas Shopping Centre, I might come here even more regularly than before! 😉

The Haute Food Co @ Plaza Damas, Hartamas – one of the best cafe for cakes & desserts in KL!

My first 2 visits to the Haute Food Company (review HERE ) had me hooked on their simple but luscious desserts.
Hence it’s not surprising that this little quaint cafe has since become one of my top choices for my desserts fix, especially on weekends. Likewise, friends & clients whom I’ve recommended has always gave positive feedback too. :good:

A little digression here: During the recent Christmas season, Plaza Damas had an actual horse – drawn carriage giving customers complimentary rides. Isn’t that so fun??

Back to the desserts; the post & pictures below is an accumulation from my many visits. I have sampled almost all of her (Ms. Li) desserts but there is always something new whenever I visit so I’m far from bored yet. 😉

The Tiramisu here comes in both alcoholic or non-alcoholic form. I have always opted for the alcoholic one (RM16) which is pretty heady due to its generous content of alcohol. But the search for the best tiramisu in town is still on-going, for as much as we like Haute Food’s version for its alcohol load, we opined that the mascarpone cheese layers is a tad too mild in taste.
