Excellent Dim sum in Ipoh – Sun Kim Aik

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: Finely made dim sum; excellent in taste, generous portions, reasonable pricing and looks pretty too!
What to order here: 1st visit and I was suitably impressed. I enjoy every dim sum I tried and would list this as my favourite so far ( Disclaimer: I haven’t tried every outlet in Ipoh).
I was told that the must-trys are the pork pau but seriously, I doubt any of the dim sum here will disappoint you badly.
Overall experience: Really satisfied with what I had. I would certainly recommend Sun Kim Aik to my friends.
Price: Price starts from about RM3.50 per portion of dim sum. Some comes in sets of 3 pieces. Some 2. Just like any other dim sum outlet.

For the long story, read on. :)

For my recent Ipoh trip, I had some dim sum at Ying Fa followed by another session at Chef Fatt. I was pretty satisfied at both, as the taste was pretty good in general and prices were fair.
However, as I stood in the midst of this bustling dim sum shop in Menglembu area I realized Sun Kim Aik is going to be of a completely different league all together.

Dim sum in Ipoh – Chef Fatt – known for its pau/steamed buns

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: Decent traditional dim sum with good bao and fried kueh kak (fried radish cake).
What to order here:
I was told that the must-trys are the pork bao but seriously, I doubt any of the dim sum here will disappoint you badly.
Overall experience: Satisfied with what I had. Not my top choice for dim sum in Ipoh though.
Price: Price starts from about RM3.50 per portion of dim sum. Some comes in sets of 3 pieces. Some 2. Just like any other dim sum outlet.

For the long story, read on. :)

I was here before my visit to Sun Kim Aik so my expectations were still under manageable levels. Now I have got to admit that I still prefer Sun Kim Aik over Ying Fa (which has shut down), Sun Kok Kee at Bercham and even here – Chef Fatt.

Still one has to admit that Chef Fatt has its merits. For one it is right in town, so the outlet is a breeze to locate – walking distance from the trinity of famous dim sum in Ipoh – Foh Sun, Ming Court and Yoke Fook Moon. It does offers a large variety of dim sum, some pretty unique. Prices are fair enough for Ipoh city and service is pretty decent.

Here’s what we begin with.

Celebrity Fitness: one of my favorite instructors – Fitness Manager Melvin Ong

Some fitness instructors can be such a bore.
I have been a gym member for as long as I can remember and I spent most of my gym hours in workout classes.
Participating in class keeps me motivated as there’s company (versus working out alone), a fun (hopefully) instructor to keep the energy going and we train following carefully structured workouts that are professionally developed and proven to work. And of course, not to mention safe too.

After years of classes I’m entitled to be opinionated about the instructors right? 🙂

Soleil – Section 17, PJ – modern European. Good desserts!

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: Semi fine dining of contemporary European cuisine with Asian influences. A good place for wines too with selection by chef sommelier Yuhei Teraoka.
What to order here: For this visit, I vouch for the desserts over the mains. What we had that day were more misses than hits.
Overall experience: There were many positive reviews before this and since the items on the menu changes every few months, it could be that the items we ordered that day wasn’t to our liking. Anyhow, full review below.
Price:
Weekday set lunches – RM48/pax or RM125.
Desserts: RM26++
Mains: RM60++ = RM100++

For the long story, read on. :)

The thing about having a rotating menu is the danger of not seeing your favourites on the menu anymore (for diners) and for the chef, a good way of showcasing his culinary prowess as well as to keep things interesting.

Petronas Chinese New Year 2014 – a short film – “Young Hearts”

For years and to a point it’s almost “a tradition”, Malaysians nationwide looks forward to Petronas festive TVCs.
Those meaningful short films which touches on cultural, heritage, family values and forgotten tradition never failed to make us sit back and reflect. Some (or maybe most?) shed tears after watching an episode.
Be it for Chinese New Year, Raya or Deepavali, these Petronas commercials were much treasured and appreciated by the society. And I for one, hope that this “tradition” lives on for many years to come.

La Crêperie de Caroline, Telawi Bangsar – great crepes and waffles!

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: Casual dining cafe that serves authentic french sweet & savory crêpes*, waffles, salads, sandwiches & ice cream.
What to order here: Crepes of course! I tried a waffle and while I do like it, I don’t think those who are accustomed to buttery, rich waffles would enjoy it. Still, do order one and share to try this particularly butter-free recipe.
Overall experience: 3 visits so far and I would recommend friends/readers to come here for some sweet and savoury bites.
Price: Basic sweet crepes starts from RM10/16 to RM28 for those with added chocolate/fruits/nuts. RM30+ would get you a flambeed crepe. Ice creams are RM13 per scoop.
Similar pricing applies for savoury crepes.
The crepes here; also called Galettes are made with buckwheat flour imported from France, which well, kind of explained the pricing.

For the long story, read on. :)

I was only interested to visit La Crêperie de Caroline after seeing on my big bro’s facebook about a certain ‘burger crepe’. As you may know I’m a huge fan of burgers and having one in the form of a crepe seems worth the drive to Bangsar.

So here’s the La Breitz Burger (RM32.00), not in your regular burger bun and not with a regular burger patty either.
