In the recent years convenience, practicality and comfort took favour over tradition & old habits.
Tau Sar Pheah – Guan Heong, Ipoh
For all that I shun sugar, I love my pastries and cakes.
And my Chinese sweet soups (tong shui).
I have never really liked English pastries; the flaky layers of butter never agree with me somehow. But the flaky crust of tau sar pneah gets to me every time.
I just love it. As long as it is not overly greasy of course.
My ideal tau sar pneah would be one with “dry” (meaning non-greasy), crispy crust, and lightly sweeten soft, fine mung bean paste.
Addition of shallots does impart fragrant, but not imperative.
I’ve blogged about a few of my favourites and Tong Huat’s in Kluang is seriously one of the better ones I’ve tried.
For Penang, I prefer Ghee Hiang over Him Hiang.
For Ipoh, Guan Heong Biscuit Shop‘s tambun biscuits are definitely worth buying.
For Teluk Intan, I’ve tried the famous Tiger & Yee Thye ones, both not bad, but I still prefer Guan Heong’s.

My housemate is from Teluk Intan and once she bought back a box of the Tiger brand tau sar pneah (tambun biscuits/mung bean biscuits) for me.
I didn’t exactly shriek in delight though I love these tau sar pneah in general. To me, tau sar pneah must be from Penang. I mean, we are known for our tau sar pneah right?
Besides, a whole box! If I don’t like it (which is the norm because I’m so picky about my food) what am I going to do with them??

Yes, it’s a month long celebration. And it’s not over as yet!
Just last week I joined the team from Tourism Malaysia for a wonderful celebration with the local people of Perak and Penang. The recently appointed Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz was present at both open houses. Throngs of people came and there were cultural performances, plenty of fabulous local cuisine and entertainment the whole evening.

My apologies for the abrupt ending to my previous post. The last week has been hell but thank god I scrapped through. 🙂
I’m now in Taiwan for a trip that I nearly cancelled. Things worked out better on the very morning of the flight, so 3 hours before the flight, I decided that situation is stable enough for me to leave.

Hey guys! I was just informed about this upcoming Gourmet event at the Banjaran in Perak! 
Needless to say I’m pretty excited to learn more about this super healthy, natural, good, simple, yet uplifting, happy creative and delicious cuisine. I have already made my reservations and would be travelling to The Banjaran to sample her food!
Though it may not be reflected in my blog (I know I blog devoted on PORK Burgers and my love for meats); I assure you that I do take my greens religiously everyday, especially during lunch time, as I need the fibre. Beside regular workouts, I do follow a healthy lifestyle regime as much as possible.
So yes, to all those who kept asking me how do I stay slim with the amount of food I ate, the answer remains “Exercise, controlled portions & never neglect the vegetables & fruits!“.

Asian Food Channel will be premiering a brand new series – Discover Perak, on Monday 22 August 2011 at 8pm. This new Malaysian travelogue series features Malaysiaʼs very own emcee/host/writer Xandria Ooi, as she goes on a gastronomic search for great food and unique specialties in the state of Perak in Malaysia.
My thoughts of this programme? What took them so long?!
If anything, I think AFC should have a series featuring food of every state in the country!
Anyhow, Perak is a good start & as I have told Xandria & Chef Julie, I’m looking forward to this series to unearth some unique & unknown delicacies of Perak. And I might even organize a food trip, with my itinerary based on this 8 -part series. Anyone game to join me??
