If you’re breaking out in cold sweat worrying about Valentine Day tomorrow I’ll advise you to take a chill pill.
Instead of celebrating on an obviously bad traffic night (knowing Friday jams in KL) marked commercially as February the 14th opt instead for a relaxed dinner with the freshest ingredients from Kansai, Japan on the 19th – 21st Feb 2014.
Today’s post is by Ms Marian Eu; a respected writer from various publications and I’m most honoured that she had agreed to share her story of her dining experience recently at TEN Japanese Fine Dining Restaurant with Iron Chef Mr Hiiroyuki Sakai and Japan’s No. 1 Patissier’s – Mr Toshihiko Yoroizuka on my blog.

Iron Chef Hiroyuki Sakai was last in Kuala Lumpur in 2011, for the opening of Ten Fine Dining restaurant in Solaris Dutamas. He was back again at Ten at Marc Residence recently, together with Japan’s No 1 Patissier Toshihiko Yoroizuka to present two dinners titled Two Masters of Heavenly Cuisine.
I have learnt to manage expectations and adjusted my palate accordingly for Japanese food here in Malaysia. I have learnt to accept that the wonderful cuisine of Japan would somehow not match those of what I had sampled in Japan or even some of our neighboring countries.
In fact, even a franchise ramen joint like Ippudo fell out of favour for me when compared to its sister outlet in Singapore, so don’t get me started about ramen in Japan.
Now, with these expectations in check, I still can somewhat enjoy Japanese food in KL. I have not been to many or all of them; that much I admit so who knows what future Japanese food hunts or new Japanese joints might offer?
And with that in mind, I remain hopeful that one day I won’t have to make my annual Japan pilgrimage for my Japanese food fix.
A fan of Ploy since its early inception as pla dib @ The Heritage Village, Seri Kembangan, I have visited a few times for events at its current outlet in Damansara.

As promised I’m updating on my experience of Ippudo Ramen again as I was invited or a media tasting yesterday. However, as you know I’m in Shanghai this week, so I got my fellow ramen lover Fui to sample on my behalf. Both of us had ate at Ippudo Singapore, and he was also with me during my first visit to Ippudo Ramen, Pavilion KL.
Everyone wants to know if the newly opened Ippudo Ramen in Pavilion serves ramen as good as the ones in Singapore. Or the ones in Japan. And is Ippudo the best there is for ramen satisfaction in KL?
Move aside The Loaf, there’s a new Japanese bakery in town with better variety, taste and wallet-friendly prices to boot!
I recalled my first meal at Watami. It was in Pavilion KL, few weeks after their opening. I remembered looking at their menu and loving the options I see. We ordered a teppanyaki style beef, a rice pot with salmon in it and I actually started my meal with the milk pudding! *will update with pictures if they are ever found
It was a good meal and I was left with a good impression.
Not long after, Watami opened a branch in 1 Utama Shopping Centre. With such close proximity to my house, I was there soon enough and this time I had a salad, another rice pot which both my dining partner and I concluded was good and worth the price paid.
