After the initial shock of my lodgings arrangements, my mood wasn’t the slightest bit improved when I found out that dinner was just drinks & finger food.
God damn. I need to be fed and I need to be fed properly.
Thank god for kind Sarawakians like Pierce and Norman, who answered our SOS calls & whisked the hungry grouchy bunch of us to the famous Kuching Open Air Food Court for some local grub before any of us passed out from hunger!

New World Park at Swatow Lane, off Burma Road is the best place for a overall experience of Penang food, under one roof.
Hot off the road from the highway, tired & flustered, I chill down with this.
Ice Kacang – topped with various fruits – banana, mango & a vanilla ice cream!
Apparently this lady has been around for a long long while. So much so that the parents of friends, uncle + aunties of fellow foodies & friends of friends (whew!) can attest to her slurpilicious noodles and swears by her superb one- of- its- kind gravy.
There’s even a juicy history that comes with the business, of which I will gladly share with you one day over a plate of …what else ? Nyonya mee rebus! 😉
A regular sized portion like the below minus any trimmings (cuttlefish, etc) is RM4.00. I wouldn’t say it’s dirt cheap, since it doesn’t come with ANY form of meat at all, but I opined that it is worth the $ once you take into consideration the laborious process required to produce the gravy.

I got to know about this place from a reader, many thanks to her for leaving a comment & attaching the FB link in one of my post; or else I wouldn’t have known about this Uncle Ben Burger Babi.
I admit I was a bit put off by the name at first; well… I mean using the word “babi” so literally! It sounded rude somehow?
But let’s ignore that for now & focus on the food instead..
When I visited the FB page, I was immediately fascinated, for it was declared on the side bar:
“We’ll defy anyone to find a better meal than ours! Our meal is a perfectly balanced ensemble of 100% PREMIUM PORK patty, cooked to perfection, with oozing MELTED CHEESE and served with fine cuts of VEGETABLES. All wrapped up in a hot toasted bun.”
Wow! That’s like Uncle Ben calling out my name -” becky becky, come try my porky patty! ” Heh!
The opportunity came rather unexpected yesterday when a certain event left all of us hungry enough to eat a pig, literally. And luckily for us, Uncle Ben Burger Babi opened their 2nd outlet (stall) in Ming Tien Food Court yesterday as well! A good sign; I thought.
I love my burgers. Problem is, good burgers doesn’t come cheap.
Ramly burgers may be wallet friendly yes, but are a no-no for me. Although I did enjoy Ana’s Green Apple burger with sambal (probably because of the novelty factor), I really detest these roadside, oily, overly processed meat + by-products patties passed off as edible burgers.
My recent discovery of an affordable, albeit small, PORK Burger in SS2 Wai Sik Kai, provided the solution to my dilemma for now. Since the stall has 3 type of burgers, I made a visit yesterday for the LAMB one.

Another discovery! And it’s an easily accessible venue for affordable pork burgers! :yahoo:
The aunty manning the stall is very friendly. Can’t say the same for the Indian/Myanmar/whatever dude who was frying the patty. Quite an arrogant fella.
For me, no matter how fancy I go, how fusion, how out-of-the-ordinary cuisine can pique my interest, I can’t do without my hawker food. While weekend mornings are for American style brekkies, most mornings it’s Nasi Lemak or a sandwich.
For lunch, economy rice is mandatory. Malay, Indian, Chinese, it’s ok. We are 1Malaysia aren’t we? 😛
There are loads of coffee shops in PJ area but I was introduced to this one rather recently by the PJ boy – UnkaLeong.

Come night time, this particular coffee shop which is famous for it’s Penang Hokkien Mee and Wan Tan Mee in the mornings is taken over by ONE stall – the Kam Heong Braised Duck. Do not expect roast ducks here, for they only sell the braised version with it’s carbo companions rice or porridge, & both best eaten with generous spoonfuls of flavoursome duck broth mixed in.
Open from 5pm onwards, this place fills up easily, and the crowd spills over to the side, front and it’s neighbouring shop’s walkway.
While duck meat are generally expensive, our meal for 2 cost us only RM8!
We had a serving of tender, slightly gamey but tasty duck meat, with a plate of aromatic rice, which I liked since it was not too oily or clumpy plus the porridge which was,.. well..porridge (I’m not a fan 😉 ).
I despise salted vegetables but I loved Kam Heong’s. It didn’t taste like salted vegetables at all! (which explains my zest 😀 ). Plus point was the bits of lard mixed in. The gizzards & liver has soaked in the flavours imparted by the duck broth. Even the chilli was worthy of mention, none of the sissified mix but with a bit of spicy kick.
All in all, it’s the perfect accompaniment to the rice & duck.
