Bangsar is almost my second home.

Want to shop or eat/chill out? You can go wrong being at the Telawi and Bangsar Villages vicinity.
Need to go low cost?
There are several mamaks around while Lucky Garden and the TMC area are good bets with numerous Chinese coffeeshops offering everything from Sarawak Laksa to Chicken Rice and dim sum.
Even for the extreme budget conscious Malaysians, the row of stalls near the famous Anuar fish head curry should be able to satisfy any appetite.

I go to my gym in the mornings and I’ll hang around until late afternoon at one of the cafes or even mamaks just so I stay out the whole day.
Staying out forces me to be more productive; for I’m finding my own office a bit too comfortable lately!

I Am 80s Cafe Petaling Jaya

We are always on the lookout for a cafe away from the usual crowded locality of Publika, Hartamas, SS2 and Damansara.
We both write, and we appreciate the occasional change of surroundings that might act as a catalyst for the dreaded writers’ block.

This was an unlikely discovery, for there is no reason for me to be in the neighbourhood but as circumstances would have it, I did went pass this street one day and saw the signboard.
“Oh, wow. A hidden cafe. Looks peaceful here.” I had thought.

My search for a quiet café away from the favoured areas of Publika, Mont Kiara and Damansara and the usual boisterous crowd yielded some encouraging results recently.

One such cafe is The Curious Goat, nestled in the quiet neighbourhood of Damansara Perdana.

Too many characterless cakes, too many cafes and too little time.

I’ve stuck to Swich for my cake fix for some time. At least the cakes are imaginative and there are new creations every week.

But today I’ve finally visited Bread Lounge at GTower, and sampled some of Chef Eugene (Tanzini/Upper Deck) creations.
Many of his pastries are based on French techniques, and for anything chocolate, it is Valrhona and Valrhona only.

I did mention in my previous post on the buffet lunch at Contango, Majestic KL that I had thought the desserts deserve another article of its own.
In fact, I looked again at my set of pictures and decided that yeap, they looked really good, and thus warrants a pretty write up on its own! 🙂

Jaslyn Cakes – Telawi, Bangsar

There’s a new cake shop in town and what’s a cake-oholic got to do if not go check it out?
She of course, asked a baker friend to come along, since she had heard Jaslyn is an accomplished baker trained from Le Cordon Bleu London and it’s always good to have second opinions.

Jaslyn’s cosy bakeshop is easy to miss, but keep an eye out for La Bodega and it is “almost” right opposite it.
The space is small, quite spartan even, but the large “kitchen” in the middle adds character to the modest setting.
It is almost like being in someone’s home watching them bake their homely pastries and then having them serve it to you fresh there and then.

My top desserts picks in KL/PJ

I’m a dessert fiend.

As much as I advocate ‘eating clean’, I have a love-hate relationship with sugar. I can’t live without it still.
The best I could do is opt for less sugar or select “healthier” sugars (honey, agave, coconut palm sugar) in my drinks and food. I do limit my intake of desserts (I seldom finish a whole slice of cake or a full scoop of ice cream) and weekends are my indulgent days.

For this article that I did for Zafigo.com I had put together my top picks of desserts in town. I’m posting it here as well (original article –> HERE ) and adding a few more to the list. 🙂

Let’s begin with something local, cheap and simple. Like our dear ais kacang; the familiar mould of shaven ice drizzled with our rose syrup and gula melaka and topped with all things sweet and delicious in a bowl.
As much as I adore my Italian gelato and Japanese mochi, the ais kacang stays top in my list of favourite things.
WHERE: Ais kacang and chendol at Brickfields
In our hot and humid city, sweet, finely-shaved ice with toppings of various textures and flavours (usually nuts, jellies, beans, sweet corns) is perfect to sooth parched throats and to cool the body down.

Shaved ice is very popular in Malaysia and can generally be presented in 2 forms; “ais kacang” (or simply ABC) or Chendol.

The former is a mound of fine ice drizzled with red, black syrup and evaporated milk with toppings such as sweet corn, red bean, jelly, attap chee (palm seeds) and for some versions; creamy ice cream and fresh fruits.
