I grew up eating apom manis on a daily basis, I kid you not.
The famous Penang apom manis stalls were all conveniently located near me as I lived in Pulau Tikus.
Zipping around on my trusty little bicycle/bike (depending on my age I owned either one) I would visit them based on my whim; what do I favour that day?
Would it be the sweet, coconuty crepes from Apom Guan? Or an added egg one from either the Ravi/Nathan of Swee Kong or Mr Ravi at Sin Hup Aun coffeeshop?
Apom Guan vs Apom Chooi PENANG – Review
It is an inevitable thing, to compare both.
I grew up eating both, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve never had a preference of one over the other.
It was a matter of who has a shorter queue at my time of arrival, though I tend to head to Apom Guan more often. It was merely habit, and also because it is nearer to the Loh Han Guo drink stall that I always patronized.

Mohd Raffe Restaurant began business since 1959 in Batu Gantong, the racecourse in Penang and subsequently moved to Pulau Tikus in 1998.
This 24 hours shoplot outlet is small and is only ventilated by fans. The ambiance is typical of a mamak shop; casual dining atmosphere, bustling with diners and workers and alive with chatter.
In the evenings, tables are set up on the shoplot’s walkway and on the street just in front of it to accommodate more customers and also for the open air dining atmosphere.

From a simple hawker stall at the entrance of Penang Botanical Gardens, this chapatti and curry business has morphed into a full fledge eatery with numerous stalls selling burgers to nasi kandar and fried rice/noodles, all managed by the same owner. This “proper” roofed eatery began business in 2010.
For over 3 generations his family had fed the young and old but mostly hungry after their exercise from the hill and the gardens

There are easily about 15 stalls offering a plethora of local specialities here.
Halal “lok-lok” – skewers of fishballs, meatballs, vegetables or meat on wood sticks cooked in boiling water and eaten with chilli and peanut paste are not commonly available and Padang Brown is one of the few places where the Muslims are able to enjoy this.

The Padang Kota Lama aka Esplanade is next to the famous Fort Cornwallis in Penang. On one end is this foodcourt, aptly named Padang Kota Lama as well.
Just opposite is the sidewalk by the sea where you can enjoy both the refreshing breeze and view.
