Malaysia International Gourmet Festival 2012 – it’s NOW!

Every year in October I religiously did my rounds for almost all of the restaurants that participated in the MIGF . 2012 marked my 3rd year, and in preparation I have doubled my gym and runs sessions to accommodate the additional calories as I eat my way through some creatively crafted menus by some of the top chefs in the country! 🙂

MIGF 2012 - malaysia international gourmet festival

Malaysia International Gourmet Festival marks 30 days of gluttony gourmet pursuits, starting 1st to 30th October where chefs of selected restaurants from hotels or stand-alone establishments craft their best menus to best showcase their culinary skills.

MIGF 2011 – West Lake Garden Chinese Restaurant, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa

Chinese Master Chef, Chan Choo Kean has never cease to amaze me with his culinary creations & creativity streak.
During the rice dumplings festival, I savoured his whopping 3kg rice dumpling; plus an array of skillfully prepared desserts.

Then I returned again for his delectable Shuang Wei Mooncakes; all of which were incredibly good, especially the novel ones like Snow Skin Green Tea with Royal Milk Tea and Mocha Paste, Golden Baked Low Sugar White Lotus Paste with Salted Dried Shrimp & Snow Skin Chocolate Whisky Paste.

That’s Master Chef Chan’s specialty I guess; his touch & ability to create new blend of flavours that works each time. Some chefs does it well, though most chefs’ efforts tend to turn out disastrous.
In Chef Chan’s case, it has been consistently stellar so far!

The sumptuous platter that whets the appetite.

MIGF 2011 – Mandarin Grill, Mandarin Oriental KL

In continuation of my MIGF exploit here in Mandarin Oriental, I headed over to Mandarin Grill right after my Lai Po Heen MIGF dinner (review–> HERE), to be acquitted with the new chef at helm, the young but capable Chef Reto Weber.

True to be told, though I’m a big lover of steaks, my previous visit (review –> HERE ) did not make an impression. I have not been back since.

MIGF 2011 :

Appetizer

Diver scallops, ricotta dumplings and tomatoes with olives

 Competently prepared. But boring.

However, it’s definitely time for a re-visit; as I have a hunch that the new chef will shake things up a little in here and I’m looking forward to (hopefully) new recipes/items on the Mandarin Grill menu.

MIGF 2011 – Lai Po Heen, Mandarin Oriental KL

Participating for the 11th year, Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur is again part of MIGF 2011 with it’s 2 signature restaurants – Lai Po Heen and Mandarin Grill.
Other than innovative gourmet creations, both restaurants very recently had a change of head chefs, with Chef Ricky Thein, Executive Chinese Chef stepping in for Lai Po Heen and Chef Reto Weber, is now Chef de Cuisine of Mandarin Grill.

Well, fresh faces, fresh menu. Or at least I hope so.

Chef Ricky Thien.

It’s good to see Chef Ricky again. I told him honestly what I thought of the quality of dim sum at his previous hotel, and was happily assured that I expect his signatures here at Lai Po Heen as well.

REVIEW: MIGF 2011 – Festival Menu @ Al-Amar, Pavilion KL

Visually arresting yes?

Nougat Glacé Laid on a Bed of Vanilla Pineapple Confit Served with Pineapple Sauce & Spiced Chocolate Shell.

migf 2011 - Al-Amar Lebanese Restaurant-13

Well, that was precisely what we thought too when we were presented with the dessert platter for the 2011 MIGF menu for Al-Amar Lebanese Restaurant.
Al-Amar is all set to impress diners with their affordable (YES, affordable!) yet superb MIGF menu this year.

REVIEW: MIGF 2011 – Festival Menu @ Chalet, Equatorial Hotel KL

Equatorial Hotel Kuala Lumpur will be hosting an “Exquisitely Swiss” promotion in conjunction with Malaysia International Gourmet Food Festival (MIGF) 2011 from 1 – 31 October 2011 in Chalet, one of their 6 fine dining restaurants.

The whole event aims to create awareness on the uniqueness of Swiss food, beverage, culture and music. For the whole month of October 2011, an invited Guest Chef; Chef Fritz Tschantre from Switzerland is here to woo diners with his signature dishes.

I was invited for a preview dinner just last week, and had the honour of having my FIRST MIGF dinner for 2011. :P

MIGF 2011 – Festival Menu @ Samplings on the Fourteen, Berjaya Times Square KL

MIGF2011-logo-page-001 (2)

Festival Chef: Chef Valmurugan Subramaniam

SamplingsOnTheFourteen_Chef_MIGF11_IMG_9378

My comments: I have heard good things about Samplings on the Fourteen, and one of their USP is that Samplings is a restaurant that gives elegant dine in experience, and it is run by students during day time as a practical site for Berjaya Universiti.
However, the restaurant is open for patrons for dinner and Chef Valmurugan is the Sous Chef handling this new starlet restaurant.
I see Cloudy Bay on the menu; my favourite wine & both the mains of Roasted Australian Pistachio Crusted Baby Veal Rack & Cajun Spiced Black Cod seems worthy of a try.

Senja

Festival Chef: Chef Giovanni Ricci

My comments: This is another place that I have never stepped in before – The Club Saujana Resort. Perhaps it’s time I do so? Haha.. Anyhow, I liked how the menu offers pocket-friendly options (well, sort of pocket friendly :P ) where the wine pairing option is RM360 per person (for any four courses);
RM280 per person (for any three courses); RM220 per person (for any two courses) & the same tiered pricing applies for the non wine pairing menus. Check out the full pricing at the bottom of this post.
