Chinese New Year Menu 2013: Celestial Court, Sheraton Imperial Hotel KL

It’s been a long long while since I stepped into Celestial Court in Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur.

Though it’s a pork free outlet, Celestial Court has always consistently maintained its reputation for stellar Cantonese cuisine. For our sneak preview of the Lunar New Year feast, the Chef has some surprises in store for us, though first impressions from the printed menu didn’t give any inkling of what lies ahead. The menu outlined pretty ordinary items, so I sat back complacently and waited to be fed.

The mahjong tiles inspired a raised eyebrow. Almost forgotten in our modernity, I suddenly had flashbacks of old folks chattering on the top of their voices while loudly shuffling the tiles on the table. There were no mahjong match that night, but I thought these mahjong tiles accompanied by imitation gold ingots makes really good table top decor nonetheless. After all, the mahjong tiles and the gold ingots represent wealth and prosperity, both highly desired attributes for all.

Formerly known as EEST, Five Sen5es is a non-halal Chinese Restaurant in the heart of Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This is my 2nd visit to Five Sen5es, the first for dinner to experience their “Five Sensory Rooms” and to sample their ala-carte menu . Tonight would be a preview of their upcoming Chinese New Year offerings.

Those who prefers a relaxing and intimate dining experience will definitely like this place, as the layout is definitely not your typical chinese restaurant.

Chinese New Year Menu 2013: Latest Recipe, Le Meridien Hotel KL

I was quite curious as to what The Latest Recipe in Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur could possibly offer in their upcoming Chinese New Year’s buffet menu considering that Le Meridien doesn’t have a chinese restaurant per se. The last I visited was in 2011 where I reviewed their Ramadan buffet (You can read about it HERE) and even back then I had thought that their buffet food to be decent though nothing out of the ordinary. Nevertheless it has remained as one of the leading buffets venue in KL and one can’t deny from its consistent crowd that the Latest Recipe buffet is rather popular.

And in a clever marketing move, it turned out that Le Meridien KL is offering Chinese New Year feast buffet-style, banking on the popularity of The Latest Recipe buffet and is adding to their daily buffet spread certain items that reflects the auspicious festival.

Chinese New Year Menu 2013: Di Wei Chinese Cuisine Restaurant, Empire Hotel Subang

One of the more memorable reviews from the total of 14 Chinese New Year feasts I had this year was at Di Wei Chinese Cuisine Restaurant at Empire Hotel Subang. Di Wei had been in my radar for a while and I had wanted to sample its modern Cantonese porky cuisine (yes, it’s non halal!) but as usual timing and work had got in the way.

I finally stepped in last Saturday and in my effort to sample Di Wei’s offerings, I had even postponed my VW Beetle -Ipoh trip to late afternoon instead of early morning departure.
And boy, I was glad I did! Di Wei’s scrumptious food was well worth the sacrifice!

The moment I walked into the dining room, I was greeted with a giant bowl of Poon Choy. That was an unexpected surprise, as I had thought the review would be in the usual sequence of Yee Sang followed by the other 7 courses. Moreover, it is my first poon choy ever, so you can imagine my delight that I’m finally able to sample one!

I had very good mooncakes, rice dumplings and even sampled West Lake Garden Chinese Restaurant’s Chinese New Year menu last year. This year, if possible, I’m liking their food even more.

At the point of sampling, I’ve had 6 Yee Sangs prior and this unarguably took the title of the best I have had.
The plate offers more fresh ingredients than the dried and fried items which I don’t really fancy. The salmon was the thickest served to me for yee sang so far and its fresh and firm flesh sure did made every bite of the yee sang even more enjoyable.

Located on the 3rd level of Mines Wellness Hotel, The Cheng Ho Court is a Halal Chinese restaurant that serves Cantonese cuisine as well as dim sum. The restaurant was named after Cheng Ho, a well-famed Chinese-Muslim court eunuch, mariner, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and many more during the Yuan Dynasty.
His voyage is usually referred to as “Voyages of Zheng He”, and you could easily find the traces of his exploits in our very own country, in the Historical state of Malacca.

Chinese New Year Menu 2013: Li Yen Chinese Restaurant, The Ritz Carlton KL

I had many great dining experiences at the Ritz Carlton, notably Li Yen for the dim sum and their annual mooncake offerings. More reviews on those HERE. For 2012 the brilliant concept of offering as low as RM50++ per pax for a minimum table of 5 during the Chinese New Year celebrations was uniquely Ritz Carlton.

Unfortunately the same concept won’t be repeated this year. Instead Li Yen would be offering CNY set menus ranging from RM1388++ to RM4288++. Yes, expect to be blown away with gourmet ingredients and gastronomical preparations.

One such dish would be the Braised Pork Trotter with Dried Oysters and Sea Moss. Oh my god, I was so sick of the usual braised seafood with broccoli versions that any variation was most welcomed. And the fact that it has a pork trotter in its midst was good enough to edge out all other similar prepations.

Shanghai Restaurant is one of JW Marriot Hotel’s premier restaurant and specialized in exquisite Shanghainese delicacies. Their menu offers modern and innovative delicacies for dim sum, lunch and dinner. This is my 1st visit to Shanghai and it was in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year’s celebration.
