AYER TAWAR FOOD: Kim Hock – Wood fire bakery – pineapple tarts, peanut cookies and traditional buns

A good friend of mine, Yungsen (we will call him YS for short) has been most enthusiastic in promoting his hometown delicacies to me since last year.
When I finally made the trip to Ayer Tawar (located about an hour drive south of Ipoh) in October, I found the small town tranquil and as expected, laid-back. The people here enjoy a simple lifestyle and traffic jams are non-existent.

But first, where is Ayer Tawar you ask?
Here’s a map – it is about 3 hours drive from KL.

New : The Loaf Bakery & Bistro – Asian Cuisine & dessert Hokkaido Honey Toast

After featuring a long list of Ramadan buffets (I have compared about 20 buffets here so click –> https://rebeccasaw.com/list-of-ramadan-buffets-in-kl-for-buka-puasa-this-2014/), I’m now looking for Ramadan set dinners.

Well I haven’t sampled many as I didn’t have much time; but I remembered that I was at The Loaf recently and the launch of their new Asian cuisines menu was worth checking out!

The Loaf’s Ramadan set is a reasonable price of RM19.90 and you can choose from Ayam Percik, Rendang Jawa or Nasi Goreng Kampung.
I didn’t try the set per se but prior to Ramadan I was at The Loaf to sample the Asian menu and overall I find the offerings well executed.

Obanhmi (Banh Mi) shop – authentic Vietnamese baguette in KL/PJ

Thanks to Sean (eatdrinkkl.blogspot.com) of course for another great find in this PJ town! 🙂
I really enjoyed my lunch today munching on this uber-delicious banh mi. It was crammed fat with pickled vegetables, fried egg, pork ham, cilantro and spread with a layer of thick pork pate.

BELOW: OMG Banh Mi –  RM11.20 each.

Tedboy Bakery – Telawi, Bangsar

I’m usually very excited about new breads and new bakeries. Consuming an average of a 400g of bread daily, there’s only that many bakeries to visit and breads I can eat before I get really really bored.

Thus new varieties, new bakeries and new baking techniques are exciting news for me. So when a long time friend of mine alerted me about this new bakery – Tedboy in Bangsar, I was immediately raring to go.

Its prime location certainly works in its favour. It’s just across the road from Delicious in BV II and on the same row as Devi’s.  If that still doesn’t get your attention, then maybe enticing fresh loaves peeking out of its store front would?

I observed that almost 80% of the passer-by would stop, stare and then pushed through the doors of Tedboy in curiosity. While not all actually purchased a loaf, chances are high that they would return to do so.

Bonjour Garden Bakery, Kota Damansara & Isetan Eat Paradise, 1 Utama

If you have been an avid follower of my blog, you would have noticed that I’m a fanatical bread lover and a burger addict. 😀
I have written a few posts on some of my favourite bakeries such as Hagen, Craft Bakers, Tommy Le Baker, etc, all which sells artisanal and healthy loaves which I’m so fond of.
While Bonjour is not exactly a pure artisan or European breads bakery, I find their loaves of a higher grade from the usual commercial bakeries, and for the very same reason that kept me returning for more each week.

Bonjour

Correct me if I’m mistaken but I’m of the opinion that the average Malaysian prefers his/her breads soft and fluffy rather than the hard crusted, chewy and heavy European-style breads.
At Tommy Le Baker and Craft Bakers, their breads are made from scratch using imported flour and all loaves are preservative, additive, dough improver and softener free. These are truly hand-baked goodness. But light and floaty these loaves aren’t for sure, and it will be sometime before the average Malaysian appreciates such breads. Admittedly there has been a shift in the bread consuming society recently, a testament to the amount of artisan bakeries popping up of late. But some bakeries still struggled, such as Hagen Bake and Brew, one of my favourite bakeries which had since gave up baking their own loaves and now stocks Heistand breads instead. Sigh.

Anyhow, back to Bonjour Garden.

PH Pastry House, KL – More BREADS and CAKES ~!

Undeniably, PH Pastry House is a lovely, lovely place.

PH Pastry House, KL-0

From the moment I stepped onto the grounds of this quaint and pretty bungalow everything had appeared promising; from the colourful decor on the walls to the water elements running round the bungalow and the spacious cafe seating. I was immediately put at ease and a smile lighted up on my face.

Levain Boulangerie & Patisserie, The real STONE OVEN bakery in KL!

It’s been a while since I was here – my last post dated May 2010 – HERE so I didn’t know what to expect. It had remained an insanely popular place since it’s opening, and from general feedback, I was informed that the quality of breads has since deteriorated, service is bad, it’s packed to the rafters everyday, etc etc.

Hence I had avoided a re-visit; til just a few days back, when a bunch of us decided that we would like to brunch out on BREADS on the 2nd day of Raya.

Thanks Pop for the pic!
