A good friend of mine, Yungsen (we will call him YS for short) has been most enthusiastic in promoting his hometown delicacies to me since last year.
When I finally made the trip to Ayer Tawar (located about an hour drive south of Ipoh) in October, I found the small town tranquil and as expected, laid-back. The people here enjoy a simple lifestyle and traffic jams are non-existent.

But first, where is Ayer Tawar you ask?

I’m a dessert monster – pastries, baked goods, sweet soups, shaved ice… you name it, I’m probably a fan.

But due to advancing age (ahem), I have been actively seeking for Chinese tong sui lately.

Sitiawan Food 2019: Authentic Fuzhou Delicacies @ Bei King Restaurant

I’m no way a connoisseur when it coms to “the best of Fuzhou/Foochow” food.
In fact many of the dishes here were a first to me; and for this trip in Sept 2018, Yungsen (YS) had introduced Fuzhou cuisine to me in the best possible way, providing me with dining experiences at both restaurants and street side.

For Foochow restaurants, I started with Ing Hua (images HERE) followed by Bei King. Both differs greatly in prices, and while the dishes possesses “homeliness” in Ing Hua, it was a better feast in Bei King due to the amount of dishes ordered. 🙂

When I was in Ayer Tawar, my generous host Yungsen ensured that I dined in the best local Foochow (Fuzhou) restaurants. A proud Foochow descendant, his goal was to share the best of his hometown’s delicacies.
